Russell Napier, 77, of Hazard, passed away on Saturday, July 19, at the Hazard Medical Center. He was retired from the United State Navy, and was also retired from the L&N railroad where he was known as "Popeye." He was the son of the late Calloway Napire and the late Eliza Jane Parks Napier. He is also preceded in death by one son, David Russell Napier; one grandson, Joshua Danner; one step-grandson, Bradley Maggard; five sisters; and five brothers.
He is survived by his wife, Norma Jean Napier; two sons, Earl, Jr., and Linda Deaton, of Bonnyman, and John and Christy Napier, of Combs; four daughters, Wilma and Arthur Maggard, of Krypton, Diane and Bob Johnson, of London, Tammy and Taylor Hignite, of Busy, and Amy and Chad Knight, of West Virginia; one sister, Wilma Jean Skaggs, of Louisville; special granddaughters, Natasha Smith and Cathy Deaton; 23 grandchildren; two step-grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; two step-great-grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews, family, and friends.
Arrangements were handled by Maggard Brothers' Funeral Home in Hazard. Family received friends after 6 p.m., Sunday, July 20 and Monday July 21 at Frontline Ministries. Funeral services were at 1 p.m., Tuesday, July 22, with James Madden, Gus Dean, and Henry Clay Robertson officiating. Interment was at the Riverside Cemetery in Hazard.
