Joe A. Akers, age 75 of Bethlehem, died Monday, Feb. 25, 2013, at Jewish Hospital in Louisville. Son of the late Joseph and Pearlie (Dean) Akers, he was the owner/operator of Lakeview Nursery. He was the previous owner of Spruce Hill Nursery in Louisville. Joe was a member of Pleausureville Baptist Church. He was on the board of directors of the Kentucky Mountain Laurel Festival in Pineville.
He is survived by his wife, Norma Akers, Bethlehem; three daughters: Debbie Akers (Kevin Macdonald), Tamarac, Fla.; Suzy Kaltenthaler (Charles) Clarksville, Tenn.; Kelly Jo Akers, Bethlehem; three sisters: Viola Harris, Norma Jean Akers, Lora Akers, all of Pineville; one brother, Lester Akers, Bethlehem; dear friend, Wanda Baker, Pleasureville; five grandchildren: Steven, Kryssy, CJ, Chaz and Alexis; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were at 11 a.m. Friday, March 1, at Pleasureville Baptist Church. The Rev. Jerry Anderson, pastor, officiated. Bro. Ed Berry and the Rev. Nick Coleman assisted. Visitation was after 5 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 28, at Prewitt New Castle Funeral Home and from 9 a.m. until the time of service on Friday at the church.
