Mary Evelyn Hargrove Land, age 89, of Eminence, passed away Sunday, Sept. 23, 2018, at Nazareth Home in Louisville. She was the daughter of the late William Harold Hargrove and Lillian Pearl Vaughn Hargrove, she lived a life focused on family, education and church.
A 67-year member of Eminence Christian Church (Disciples of Christ), Mary Evelyn established the church library and served as secretary of the board, deacon and librarian. She was passionate about education, both as a student and a teacher. Graduating from Campbellsburg High School, she earned her undergraduate degree in Home Economics from WKU, an elementary education certification from KSU, as well as a graduate degree in library science and Rank I teacher certification from the University of Kentucky.
She began her career as a UK county extension agent in Scott and Trimble counties. She was an educator for 27 years at Eminence Independent Schools, first as a sixth-grade teacher and then as the librarian. She was a charter member of the Henry County Historical Society and an inductee into the Eminence High School Hall of Fame.
She was preceded in death by her husband, William Leslie Land; and brothers, W.H. Hargrove Jr. and Robert Hargrove.
She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Mary Leslie and Ron Geoghegan of Louisville; and her grandson, Joe Geoghegan of Louisville.
Funeral services were held at noon on Monday, Oct. 1, 2018, at Eminence Christian Church.
Interment was in Eminence Cemetery.
