Richard "Dick" Drakeford Steele, Sr., age 87 of New Castle, died on Thursday, Feb. 28, 2013, at the Robley Rex VA Medical Center in Louisville. Son of the late Roger and Martha (Bedford) Steele, he was a United States Marine Corps Veteran, serving with the Fox Company in WWII. He was one of the few survivors of the Battle of Iwo Jima and was a recipient of a Purple Heart. He was a member of the National Farmers Organization as well as the Kentucky and National Charolais Associations.

He is survived by his wife, Mary Louise Steele of New Castle; his son, Richard D. Steele II (Melodye), New Castle; grandson, Drake Steele; three sisters: Emily Haggard (Chester), Huntsville, Ala.; Martha Meador (James), Austin, Texas; Betty Sither, West Palm Beach, Fla.; and several nieces and nephews. Dick was preceded in death by his brother, John B. Steele, Sr.
Graveside Service were at 2:30 p.m. Monday, March 4, at Lexington Cemetery, officiated by the Rev. Rick Davidson of La Grange Baptist Church.
Pallbearers were Drake Steele, Joe Tingle, Charles Downs, Ryan Helton, Derek Tingle and Dean Warren.
