RICHARD KENDALL Obituary





RICHARD CHESTER KENDALL, 92, formerly of West Union, Ohio died Thursday, December 24, 2015 at Woodlands Retirement Center in Huntington, WV. He was born April 15, 1923 in Winchester, Ohio. He was preceded in death by his father, Curtis Henry Kendall in 1929, his mother, Mary Louisa Neal in 1969, and sister Mildred Wray in 2001. He is survived by his wife of 72 years, June (Holliday) Kendall; children: Richard Chester Kendall, Jr. and wife Linda of Coral Springs, Florida; Kathryn June Combs and husband Dan of West Union; and Mildred Kim Staggs and husband, Javie of Proctorville. They were also blessed with 10 grandchildren and 17 great grandchildren. He was a 1941 Graduate of Winchester High School and was awarded a degree in Business from Ohio University. He served in the US Army during WWII. After returning from the service, he joined his father-in-law and opened K&H Hardware in West Union. He later added

Richard's Monument Company. His strong work ethic and ambitious spirit enabled him to become a successful and prominent businessman in the community for many years. He was actively involved in many organizations in Adams County including: President of the West Union Lion's Club, First Presbyterian Church Elder, Board President of the National Bank of Adams County, American Legion Honor Guard, West Union Businessmen's Association, West Union Town Council, member of the Adams County Country Club, and Adams County Veterans Service Officer. He was a 32nd degree Mason. He served as President of the Ohio Hardware Association, President of the National Retail Hardware Association, and President of the Ohio Monument Federation. He was a founder of Columbia National Life Insurance Company and also served on the Board of Directors. He and June spent most winters in Sun City Center, Florida where he was also active in the community. He served as a member of the Sun City Center Community Association, Board Chairman of Sun City Center Bank, President of the Ohio Club, and Ambassador for the Sun City Center Area Chamber of Commerce. Memorial donations may be made to the West Union First Presbyterian Church, 104 South Second Street, West Union, Ohio 45693; the West Union American Legion Young-Moore Post #100, c/o Tony Blevins, P.O. Box 335 West Union, Ohio 45693; and/or the Proctorville VFW Post 6878, 32 Township Road 1225, Proctorville, Ohio 45669. A memorial service will be held on Tuesday, January 5, 2016 at 2 p.m. at the West Union First Presbyterian Church. Reverend Dr. David Sugarbaker will officiate. A private graveside service will be held at West Union Cemetery. The Adams County Honor Guard will perform a military service. Lafferty Funeral Home in West Union is serving the family.
