Mary Rose Obituary

Mary went in peace and with great joy to be with her Lord and Savior on July 11th in Clinton, MS. Born Mary Elizabeth Smith on 1/13/17 in Birmingham, AL, to the late Mary Beatrice Bearden and William Henry Smith, Mary was a long time resident of Miami-Dade County, having graduated Miami Senior High at the height of the Great Depression. For decades, she was a devoted member of Shenandoah Presbyterian Church, the bookkeeper at Granada Presbyterian and later at The Old Cutler Presbyterian Church. Her great loves were serving her Lord by holding and rocking the infants in the nursery at church, singing in the choir, and being a Christian witness, friend and matron to each person she met. Her loving, motherly spirit will remain an inspiration for thousands but especially her own family. She is survived by five of her children: Mary E. (Beth) Bondurant, [Bob] of Huntington, WV; Paul M. Rose [Lori] of Fernandina Beach, FL; John H. Rose of Clinton, MS; Timothy R. Rose [Suzanne] of Miami; and Rebecca B. Parrott, [Carl] of Greer, SC. Mary was predeceased by her eldest son, James W. Rose [Linda] formerly of Rolla, MO. She also leaves 17 grandchildren, 27 great-grandchildren, and many, many more extended family members in the Lord. A celebration of her life of service will be held at The Old Cutler Presbyterian Church at 14401 Old Cutler Road on Saturday, August 11th at 2:00 P.M. Donations may be made to the charity of choice or to The Old Cutler Presbyterian Church, 33158. "Be of good cheer, daughter, your faith has made you well." Matt. 9:22

Dear Mary Rose,
You were an amazing woman of God! I will never forget going into the nursery and seeing you sitting in a rocking chair rocking a baby. You would call me to you and give me a warm, loving hug. You were like a grandmother to me. You meant so much to our family. You had a way about you that was so comforting and safe. And the way you sewed! Tirelessly, caring for so many others. I have the sock doll and quilt that you made for my oldest daughter, Kayla. What a wonderful remembrance of the beautiful way that you loved people. You have impacted generations and are such a faithful and beautiful woman. I can't wait to see you when I get to Heaven!

We have heard the term "Pillar of the Church" To me it suggest Mary. She was a prayer warrior, an encourager, and a true reflection of God's love. Joan and I have been gone from Old Cutler Presbyterian for thirteen years. Our reminder of the great years we had there was the Christmas card we recieved from Mary each year. Joan and I extend our sympathy to Paul, Tim, Chris, Jon and the rest of the family.

Though it's been decades since Mary left Granada, her lovely notice leaped out of our weekly scan of the hometown obits. That's what a powerful impact this gentle lady made. She was a precious part of Granada's history, and we are privileged to have been there when she served and cared for us. We look forward to seeing her again!

Mary Rose had a profound and lasting influence on my life. She was my Sunday School teacher at Shenandoah Presbyterian Church (Miami) back in the 1960s. God used her, other Shenandoah Church men and women, and the pastor, Rev. J. Wayte Fulton, to bring me to a saving knowledge of Jesus Christ. I still have a small New Testament (KJV) Bible she gave to me some 50 years ago (July 1, 1962) inscribed "Ricky Hodges from Mrs. Rose" and the annotation "II Tim. 2:15" - "Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth." She was a true witness of her Lord Jesus Christ in every area of her life. I enjoyed many a day at the Rose home playing with her children. And she made the best cakes in the world (Pineapple Upside-Down Cake, Fruit Cocktail Cake, etc.) She was faithful in all things. My prayers for the family. May God be the "God of all comfort and the Father of all compassion." - Rev. Richard B. Hodges, pastor, Salem Presbyterian Church (PCA), Blair, S.C.

My love goes out to each of you her children. I was so fortunate to be part of her Shennandoah family. She certainly showed us what love is! Her passing is God's gain and our loss. How wonderful to have put so much joy in the lives of so many of us. For all of this I am truly thankful.

My thoughts and prayers are with all of Mary's family members. I was blessed to work with Mary in the church Nursery for many years. I got to know her well and she became a role model and trusted confidant. Mary's love for babies and children was part of her personal ministry. She kept up with expecting mothers; the pulpit rose that was placed that Sunday in honor of the new born was delivered by Mary and one of the pastors to the family at home, along with a special item knitted by Mary. She comforted and counseled new mothers and was instrumental in building a team of at home support to a family who was blessed with triplets. She was a great inspiration to me; I always knew I could go to her with spiritual or personal struggles and receive gentle biblical advise, prayer and love. She touched hundreds if not thousands of lives that will impact others because they were loved by Mary. She was a special servant of God. She was love and grace personified. Until we meet again, Meme.

Mary will be missed. She was an inspiration and blessing to me in many ways (my son still has the clown doll she made for him almost 21 years ago). I'm glad she is home with our Lord & Savior, but I know her absence on this earth brings tears and sadness to many. May God bring comfort to each of us as we mourn our loss and celebrate her presence in heaven!

Blessings
