Carl Fabian Obituary

FABIAN, Carl Edward, was born in New York City on November 1st, 1934 and as a young child moved with his family to Rochester, NY, where he spent his early childhood. They later returned to New York City at the end of WWII and settled in Astoria, Queens. He attended Brooklyn Technical High School, Cornell University, and then the State University Medical School of New York in Brooklyn, obtaining his M.D. in 1960. He took his residency in radiology at Kings County Hospital, finishing in 1964 as chief resident. He then joined the faculty of Stanford University Medical Center and taught radiology there for two years. In 1966, his career was interrupted by the Vietnam War and a two-year stint in the U.S. Army Medical Corps in Panama. While in Panama he attended jump school and won his parachute 'wings' and later took flying lessons and received a pilot's license. Upon leaving the Army they moved to Miami, Florida where Carl entered the private practice of radiology but continued a career-long teaching affiliation with the University of Miami Medical School, eventually becoming clinical Professor of Radiology. During his career he authored several medical papers and later in life devoted himself to finding an electronic means to prevent the accidental loss of surgical sponges within the wound, work which was eventually published. His interests also included tennis and wind-surfing, and he maintained a long relationship with Camp Sea Gull in North Carolina where he volunteered as camp physician for two weeks every summer for over thirty years. His dear wife of forty years, Aida Meiseles, was also a physician who was born and raised in Buenos Aires, Argentina. She received her medical degree there and then came to the U.S. for an internship and training in neurology. She and Carl met at Kings County Hospital in Brooklyn and in June of 1960 they were wed. Aida practiced medicine at Gorgas Hospital in Panama and later in Miami but devoted most of her attention to raising their three children. She developed ovarian cancer and tragically passed away in 1997. Carl had insulin-dependent diabetes for over forty years, a disease which led to numerous complications and ultimately his death on December 24th. He leaves three children, Deborah, Mark and Carla, and four grandchildren, Zachary, Ashlee, Alexandra and Jordann. Carl will be remembered for his keen intelligence and sense of humor, his love of learning, his kindness and generosity, his eternal optimism and his joi-di-vivre. He was well-loved and respected by many and will be greatly missed. A memorial service will be held at the McArthur Chapel in Miami Shores (across the street from Miami Shores Presbyterian Church at 602 NE 96th Street) on Saturday, January 5th, 2013 at 11:00am followed by a gathering at the Great House at Quayside (Biscayne Blvd and 107th Street). In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the V.A. hospital, where Carl received exceptional care throughout his stay. Checks can be made out to 'Miami VAHS.' Please note 'Fisher House, GPF #8033' in the memo section and mail to: Miami VA Healthcare System, Voluntary Service (135), 1201 NW 16th Street, Miami, FL 33125.

Dear Carla, Debbie and Mark
I just learned about the passing of Dr. Fabian and wanted to send you my sincere condolences. You all must know that it was an honor to have known your father.
During the time that I kept in touch with him, he impacted my life profoundly. More than a friend, he became a mentor and an inspiration to me as a man in many ways.
I thought about him often and am a better person because of the many things I learned from him during our long conversations about life (And politics).
May he rest in peace…
My very best regards to all and may your family be blessed always.
Sincerely,
Frank A. Aguilar
