Joseph J. Moder

Joseph Moder died Dec 14, 2012, in Celina, Texas, after a long battle with dementia. He was professor of industrial engineering and management science at the University of Miami for nearly 30 years. Born Dec 12, 1924 in St. Louis Missouri, he served in the navy in 1944 - 1945, then earned a PhD in chemical engineering from Northwestern University on the G.I. bill. He earned a second doctorate in statistics and operations research, with fellowships at Iowa State and Stanford Universities, before working at the Georgia Institute of Technology and the University of Miami. Author of many books, chapters, and research articles, Dr Moder applied statistical analysis to topics ranging from marketing peanuts to warhead pellet dispersion, from industrial quality control at companies like IBM to lottery design for the state of Florida. He served in the National Defense Executive Reserve for FEMA in the 1980s. He served on the board of directors for the Community Habilitation Center, which provides vocational training to adults with developmental disabilities. He is predeceased by his wife Florence, and sons Jeffrey and Sam. He is survived by his daughter Maria, his three sons, Fred, Chris, and John, and 7 grandchildren, as well as his wife, Wendy (Bethell), and two stepsons, Bruce and Roderick, and their 5 children. A memorial celebration will be held at Old Cutler Presbyterian Church, 14401 Old Cutler Rd, Miami, FL on Saturday, Jan. 19, 2013, at 2:00pm.
