Gary Scott Shimminger

City of Miami Beach Police Captain Gary Scott Shimminger,55, of Cooper City Florida finished his final run crossing the finish line straight into the gates of heaven Saturday April 6, 2013 on The Hollywood Beach Boardwalk while running in the Race to End Homelessness 5k charity for the Homeless Voice. (Bib 845, 6th Pl, OAP 115 finishing in 31:20 with a 10:06 mile) Gary was born in Baltimore Maryland May 1, 1957 to Andrea and Bill Shimminger. In the early 1960's with his parents and siblings Billie Lynn and Mark, Gary moved to Miami Florida. He graduated from Christopher Columbus Catholic High School in 1975, where he was awarded a Baseball Scholarship to Dade South Community College. After a year he transferred to his alma mater Florida State University, Class of 1980. He returned home and began his career in Law Enforcement with the Town of Virginia Gardens in December 1981. In 1987 he join the Metro-Dade Public Safety Department (Miami-Dade Police Dept), where he moved up the ranks over his 26+ years of dedicated service. He proudly served and received numerous awards and commendations, including the Silver Medal of Valor (Life Saving) before retiring on September 31, 2012 as the Major of Internal Affairs. Three days following his retirement on October 3, 2012 Gary was hired by the City of Miami Beach as the Commander in Charge of Internal Affairs where he remained until his death. This loving, dedicated husband and father is survived by; wife Karen, son Scott Demby of Cooper City, daughters, Nicole (Jonathan) Branam of Celebration FL, Cristina and Alexis of Cooper City. He is also survived by; his father, Bill Shimminger, Miami, FL brother Mark (Patricia) Shimminger, Franklinton NC, sister Billie Lynn (Joseph) Clark Orlando, FL, nephews Tyler and Justin Shimminger Franklinton NC, and Travis Clark, Orlando FL, and niece Lauren Clark of Orlando, FL. He is preceded in death by his mother Andrea Marie Shimminger. Funeral: 4/10/13 @ 10:00 AM Potential Church 12401 Stirling Rd.
