John D. Muncey

Muncey, John D., of Miami, Florida, a retired Lt. Colonel, U.S. Army, passed away peacefully surrounded by family on July 29, 2013. Born in Plainfield, New Jersey, son of the late John O. and Helen Muncey, he attended Saint Theresa Catholic School, and graduated from Coral Gables High School, Class of 1957. Serving over 30 years in the U.S. Army, his military career and decorations include Legion of Merit, Meritorious Service, Special Forces, Expert Infantry Badge, Master Parachutist Badge, Pathfinder, Diver, USMC & German jump wings, among others. John retired with over 30 years of employment with Miami-Dade County. His career included positions with Parks and Recreation, Risk Management and Miami-Dade Police Department. He was an active member of several organizations, including the 82nd Airborne Division Association, Reserve Officers Association, Military Order of World Wars, Army Navy Club, and The Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks, among others. John was an active member of St. Timothy's Catholic Church, serving as Eucharistic Minister and was a Secular Franciscan belonging to the Queen of Peace Fraternity. He is survived by his daughter, Patricia Moghari, his daughter, Valerie Ortiz and son-in-law, Timothy Ortiz, his brother, Paul Muncey and sister-in-law, Susan Hedding, and grandchildren, Matthew, Devon, Ryan, Timothy and Mary Grace. He was predeceased by his beloved wife of 38 years, Mary Largay Muncey. A Celebration of Life will be held from 6-9 pm on Friday, August 2, 2013 at Van Orsdel Funeral Chapel, 11220 N. Kendall Drive. A Memorial Mass will be celebrated at 2 pm on Saturday, August 3, 2013 at St. Timothy's Catholic Church, 5400 SW 102 Avenue followed by internment at Our Lady of Mercy Catholic Cemetery.
