Michael (Mickey) Zaret

ZARET, MICHAEL (MICKEY), 84 passed away June 18th, leaving his beloved wife, best friend and love of his life, Cynthia, dear sister Rita Lewenauer, dear sister-in-law & brother-in-law Inez & Melvin Lesser and many nieces and nephews. Born on August 21, 1929 in Far Rockaway, New York , he was the son of the late Harry and Lilyan Bergida Zaret. He was a third generation builder. His grandfather built the many historic beach bungalows in Far Rockaway, Queens, New York. Mickey came to Miami in 1936 because his father had a job to do. Harry Zaret built 27 Miami Beach hotels during his association with Zaret Construction, then one of the largest construction companies in the South Florida area. Mickey was president of Zaret Building Corporation. At age 25, he built the first high-rise apartment on the Gold Coast, the Executive Apartments in Miami Beach. He learned the business the hard way, beginning at age 18 working outside for six years, from the bottom all the way up: from carrying board, hammering nails, running concrete, to being superintendent on jobs, coming into the office and handling the whole staff. They also built thousands of houses in the area of Portsmouth, Virginia, launching pads for guided missiles on Cape Canaveral, and schools. He joined I.Z. Mann & Associates as a partner and built the first series of condominiums throughout the State of Florida. He was associated with Victor Posner Enterprises and Plaza Building Corp. for six years and built condominium apartments throughout Dade and Broward County. He was a Receiver for the Art Deco Hotels, a Special Master for the Courts, a real estate and building developer and consultant. He was an alumni of Miami Beach High School. Mickey had a happy and eventful life. He will be sorely missed by all who loved and respected him.
