Lory John Snipes

SNIPES, LORY JOHN Age 88, passed away at home on November 14, 2017. He was born in Thomasville Georgia, but lived in Miami since early childhood. He attended Miami Jackson High School, and graduated from the University of Miami in journalism and served as an Iron Arrow Chief. He served in the US Coast Guard as communications officer on the Cutter Ingham. He worked for the Miami Herald for 5 years as an illustrator, and spent a 30 year career with FPL in corporate communications. His writing and editing included Jackson's Old Hickory, the UM Ibis, FPL's Sunshine Service News, and the Snipes Family of America newsletter. He was a talented artist. He designed logos for Iron Arrow, and FPL, did storm prep diagrams for the Herald, and did cartoons for his many publications and SDX programs. He had begun writing a personal account of the 1935 Yankee hurricane in 2011 when Alzheimer's began to rob him of his memories. He was grateful to his parents Flossie and Odell, and the many mentors he had through his life. He treasured the long friendships he had from boyhood, college, professional associations and retirement years. Many of his long term friends were returning WWII vets he met in college. He always respected their wisdom and maturity. Lory shared a 62 year marriage to Marion "Liz" Snipes. He leaves son Stephen and his wife Mary, daughter Jennifer and her children Shannon, Greg, and Claire, and son Thomas, and his son Scott and wife Kelly. No service will be held. Interment of his ashes next to his Mother at Dade South Memorial will be done later as a family event. Thanks to Heartland Hospice and his care givers. Arrangements by Van Orsdel Kendall.
