Ioannides, ANDREA, beloved wife, mother, and grandmother, died on Wednesday, May 1, 2013 after a courageous struggle with cancer. She was predeceased by her parents, Peter and Angeline Fierro, and her husband, George Ioannides, MD. She was born in Hazleton, PA on Oct. 27, 1938. She moved with her parents to Miami in 1956, and attended the University of Florida. She then worked as a histotechnologist at Bascom Palmer Eye Institute on the Jackson Hospital campus. It was here that she met her husband, and they were married at St. Sophia Greek Orthodox Cathedral in 1963. Their three children were born soon afterwards. Andrea didn't just marry her husband; she married a Greek. She learned to speak Greek, how to cook Greek many people thought she was Greek (actually, she was Italian). The Ioannides family celebrated Greek Easter at their home with many friends complete with lamb cooked on a spit all expertly coordinated by Andrea. The family was very active in the Miami Greek community, first at St. Sophia and later at St. Andrew Greek Orthodox Church. Andrea served on the Parish Council for many years, and was President. She was also a former President of the church's Philoptochos Society, and the Sunday School Director. She volunteered countless hours to help with the Miami Greek Festival. In her later years, Andrea enjoyed working with the church's Senior Citizens group, especially in her recent role as bingo caller. It was through the church, and memberships in other groups such as the Miami Watercolor Society, Coral Gables Music Club, and Fairchild Tropical Botanic Garden, that Andrea developed many close friendships that lasted for years. Within these groups, she participated in book clubs, played dominoes, attended shows at the Univ. of Miami's Ring Theater and dined around Miami with her "Lunch Bunch." Andrea truly cherished her very dear friends, who were so supportive through the years, and especially, through her last days. But most important of all, Andrea was the quintessential mother. Her devotion to her children (and later, her grandchildren) was the focus of her life. From sewing costumes to carpooling to last-minute school projects Andrea was always there for her children, and for this, they are forever grateful. She is survived by her children: Barbara (Robert) Alderman, of Hollywood, FL, Tim (Cammy) Ioannides, MD of Vero Beach, FL, Ann Ioannides-DeLeon, of Seattle, WA, and five grand-children: Annie and George Alderman, Jacob and Gianna DeLeon and Cammy Ioannides. Viewing services will be held Monday, May 6, 2013, 6:30-9:30p.m. at Stanfill Funeral Home, 10545 S.
