ANTOINETTE GORRIN Obituary

GORRIN, ANTOINETTE F., passed away on May 16th, 2011 peacefully at home after battling cancer since 1985, she was a true fighter and a very determined woman. Born: May 14, 1925 in Habana, Cuba; Parents: Arturo Fonts y Veytia and Maria Antonia Ona. In 1948 she married Enrique Gorrin, and worked as a teacher in Collegio Columbus, left Cuba fleeing the Castro regime in 1960 and settled in Miami, Florida. A very intelligent and charismatic woman she immediately was employed at the Cuban Refugee Center International Rescue Committee (IRC) 1961. She assisted in the process of interviewing, helping find support to find jobs, money vouchers, Red Cross assistance and relocation services by helping Cuban Refugees find their relatives through community agencies. In 1962, she was very proud to have been invited to the Pan American Round Table to speak about the impact of the Cuban Revolution and its affect on Cuban Women, joined by her very close friend, Sylvia M. Goudie. In 1968 when the Cuban Refugee Center closed she organized in service training for the employees at the Cuban Refugee Center who were interested in taking the Federal Service Entrance Exam and join Social Security Administration. In 1972 she graduated from UM with a BA in Special Ed. Cum Laude and completed her Masters at FIU 1975. In 1980 she assisted with the Mariel Boatlift by organizing and processing of Cuban Refugees at Eglin AFB. In 1983 she married Jorge Luis Aldecoa and continued her work as an analyst in Social Security Admin. She retired in 1991 after 29 years of service in the Federal Government. She will be greatly missed by all. She is survived by her children, Ginie Gorrin, stepson, Jorge and Andrea Aldecoa; grandchildren, Eric Alberto Socarras, Enrique and Christina Amell Socarras; great- grandchildren, Sophia and Marley Socarras. A Mass will be celebrated on May 26, 2011 at 1:00 p.m. in St. Brendan Catholic Church located at 8275 S.W. 32nd Street, Miami, Florida.
