Calixto Acosta Obituary

ACOSTA, CALIXTO ALFONSO. Homegrown son Calixto Alfonso Acosta - born and raised here and a graduate of St. Thomas the Apostle, Christopher Columbus High School and Florida State University - passed away Friday. He was 30 years old. Mr. Acosta, the son of Cuban exiles, was employed at The Miami Herald as an online support specialist working in the advertising division. He had been recognized for outstanding accomplishments and contributions to his team and the advertising division. An avid reader and writer, Mr. Acosta earlier in his career penned a biography about a prominent Illinois family. Prior to that, he lived with his wife of eight years, Marta Jagiello, in her native Poland, where he worked as an English teacher at private language schools in Warsaw. Fishing, snorkeling and hiking were among his hobbies. A longtime and active member of the U.S. grassroots environmental organization The Sierra Club, Acosta dedicated most of his free time to visiting state and national parks - The Everglades and The Florida Keys being his favorites. He spent much of his childhood at his parents' home in Key Largo, where he fostered his life-long appreciation for South Florida's fauna and flora. And as an adult, he frequented Key West - home of one of his favorite authors, Ernest Hemingway. "He loved nature," Ms. Jagiello said. "His bedside reading always included a book about Florida wildlife." When he wasn't exploring nature by book or foot, Mr. Acosta turned his interests to politics. He was a member the Young Democrats of Miami-Dade County and attended their monthly meetings. Ms. Jagiello said her husband's credo in life stemmed from American writer Robert Frost's poem, The Road Less Traveled: Two roads diverged in a wood And I took the one less traveled by And that has made all the difference Mr. Acosta is survived by his wife; his mother, Maria Victoria Cueto, and step-father, Delio Nunez- Menocal; sister Tina Acosta Nessl, brother-in-law James Nessl and his two children, Megan and James II; and his uncle and aunt, Alfonso and Blanche Cueto; as well as many uncles, aunts, cousins and step-siblings. A service will be held on Thursday, August 6th at 6:00 pm at St. Louis Catholic Church, 7270 SW 120th Street in Pinecrest. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to The Sierra Club, www.sierraclub.org. To visit this Guest Book Online, go to www.MiamiHerald.com/obituaries.

I'm so sorry and shocked to hear about Cal! So strange that I'm sitting in Central Park in New York where Cal and I used to hang out when we worked at camp America together in 2000 and I was wondering how I could get back in touch with my old friend and Marta too. How devastating to find this news online. Cal was one of the kindest, loveliest and most good people I ever had the privilege of knowing. May he rest in peace. My thoughts and prayers are with all of his family whom he loved and spoke of so dearly.

Cal, as we stumble upon almost a year after your death, I cant believe you're gone. You'd be glad to know we are still a family, Mom, Marta and I. We think about you often and talk about you alot. It's sad that you can't be here to continue to make memories with us. We are not whole without you but we have no other choice but to move forward. I miss you everyday but firmly belive that you are in a better place. I love you forever! Your sister, Tina

Vicky and Tina: The service was beautiful, truly befitting your son and your family. I know everyone there was sharing your grief, even if in a way that was barely imaginable. I know it's not much consolation, but there are no words that have not been said and that could convey much more. I know Cal's life left a footprint on many hearts, and that he left the world not as good as he found it, but better for having been here. Keep that in mind as you go on, and know that you can always count on me and my family.

Dear Vicki,
I am so sorry to hear about the sudden loss of your beloved son, Cal. You always spoke with such pride about both of your children, and you took such joy at their accomplishments and what kind of people they had become. I am more sorry than I can say that you and your family should suffer such a loss. I wish you and your family and friends grace and peace as you grieve for Cal. You are in my prayers-

Toya,
I remember Cal when he was just a little boy. I remember that he took me on a tour of the coast near your house at Key largo and he gave me detailed explanations of everything we saw. There was even an abandoned boat which he proceeded to tell me a story as to how he thought it got there. Super nice young man....this event took place more than 20 yrs ago! I left your house that day impressed with his sensitivity about things around him and his ability to communicate details about the environment - even at that tender age! Toya, the loss of a son is one of life's greatest tragedies. When Lina and I heard of Cal's passing, our hearts went out to you. While the physical body of Cal is now gone, I know that the quality time and the relationships that you had through the years as a family will continue to be a part of your life. It is our prayer that Our Lord will sustain you and give you strength during these times of loss as the memories of Cal continue to be with you throughout your days.

Dearest Vicky, Tina & Martha:

My fondest memories of Cal started when he was just a young one year old litle boy, as I was one of his first baby sitters! His cute, loveable personality was evident at such a young age...The greatest memories I have are playing with both Cal and Tina while I watched over them. His gentle, kind and respectful manner will be missed by us all....Let's cherish the wonderful times we had together with Cal and remember his sweet and smiling face always...

Mi querido sobrino "little Cal":

Las tantas veces que me decías: "I love you Titi Mariela" y yo te contestaba: "I love you too little Cal. Los momentos tan agradables que pasamos en las fiestas de Navidad y Thanksgiving.

Mi adorado sobrino siempre tendrás un lugar muy especial en mi corazón. Fuiste siempre un ser tan dulce, cariñoso y limpio de alma que Dios tiene que tenerte en un lugar muy especial en su reino. Descansa en paz mi querido sobrino. Mis oraciones siempre estarán contigo.

Vicky, Tina and Marta (whom I have never met),
I learned about the tragic passing of Cal this morning through our mutual friend, Frank Garcia. I am stunned by the enormity of this event.
It is hard to be so far away geographically... I now live in Israel, when I wish I could hug each of you, close to my chest, and share some heart-felt tears.
We all believe in God as a kind Father to all of His creatures. Cal loved nature, and this love brought him in communion with the universe. His soul was good and pure, and he is now lovingly cuddled by our Father.
Regardless of our present geographic distance, love, friendship and kindness know no boundaries. All of your friends are here for you... even from the far away Galilean mountains where I now live.
¡Que Dios los bendiga a todos, y que guarde, con mucho amor, el alma impoluta de Calixto Alfonso Acosta!

Cal...there are way too many memories for me to write on here. I just lost a brother and sadness doesn't quite cover what i'm feeling. The thousands of memories throughout so many years of perfect, yet at the same time "perfectly dysfunctional" friendships will always be remembered in my heart with so much pride, laughter, and deep fondness...See you on the other side my brother, RIP.

I was shocked when I heard the sad news. I was one of the first people Cal met when he started at The Herald. He stopped by my desk to ask me a question and saw all my pictures of when I met Johnny Depp and other celebs and we instantly became friends because he loved all my quirky things on my desk. We shared a love of movies, and he was always telling me about different books he was reading. He always had a smile on his face. Even after I left The Herald we still kept in touch through Facebook. He will be greatly missed. My heart and prayers go out to his family during this difficult time.

Dear, sweet Cal:
I have so many beautiful memories of you as a young child playing with Daniel and Adam. You were truly part of our family. My most precious memory of you was when Daniel was born and you went to share your "aya" with him because he was crying. You were always tender and loving and just wanted to be loved. I hope that you felt the love that everyone had for you. We all commend you to the loving hands of our heavenly Father and our Blessed Mother. May they give you the spiritual peace that you have always searched for. Our eternal love, Titi Maru, Tio Jon, Daniel, and Adam.

Marta and Family,

We were shocked and saddened to hear the news, Cal was a great colleague while at Yellowbook.

We will never forget the lunch hours were we would sit around and laugh and make jokes. He was always smiling, always willing to help out, a great member of our team . He will definitely be missed.

Our thoughts are with you during this difficult time.

Marta, Tina, Vicky, and Family,

Words cannot express how sorry I am for your loss. I pray that God's peace be with you during this difficult time.

"We may not understand why you left this earth so soon, or why you left before we were ready to say good-bye, but little by little, we begin to remember not just that you died, but that you lived. And that your life gave us memories too beautiful to forget. We will see you again some day, in a heavenly place where there is no parting. A place where there are no words that mean good-bye."

I am so sorry for your loss. My thoughts are with you. Although no words can really help to ease the loss you bear, just know that you are very close in every thought and prayer.
