A tour of Feinberg-Fisher K-8 given by a current teacher stopped at the World War 2 memorial, which has a plaque dedicated to Hyman (Hank) Bergman. We sat there for a few minutes, reading the online obituary and reflecting on Mr. Bergman´s wartime service and his service to generations of students. Of all the wonderful parts of the school campus, especially the `food forest´ and gym, this quiet little spot moved me the most. It may unnoticed by most, but its enduring presence is a testament to the impact Mr. Bergman had on so many. This little plaque and war memorial bring that impact forward to each new generation, enriching the lives of those who spend a few moments in reflection here.

What an interesting story. I spent the war years in Miami Beach while my father was in the Pacific with the 11th AB. Began school at Central Beach, and left at the war's end after 5th Grade. 5 years ago I went back for the first time, and visited the school. Hank sounds like the GIs I made friends with as a little kid living on Collins Ave, Bless you all.

Sherman, your father was my 6th grade teacher in 1963. I had just arrived recently from Cuba, he made us all feel so welcomed. I learned so much from him especially English. I remember his wonderful war stories during Social Studies. During our 40th Beach High Reunion, several of us remembered what a wonderful teacher and person your Dad was!

Sherman, I taught with your Dad at Fienberg Elementary School. He was an excellent teacher and a good friend. We left Fienberg at about the same time. He taught my son how to play chess who still plays with his sons. He will be remembered by many students.

Sherman, just happeded to be reading Sunday's Herald today and was shocked to read about your father's passing in the local section. All of a sudden the memories started comming back to me of all the times your father used to drive the two of us to Beach High in that red car he used to own. You guys would pick me up in front of Biscayne Elementary. I think he might of also driven us to a few of the closed circuit Ali fights at the Convention Center. It was very interesting to read about his experiences during the War and the Chess victories years later. My condolences to you Sherman, (who I've known for 40-years) your Mom, who I met several times back in the 1970s and the rest of your family. Again, I remember talking to your Dad while sitting in the back seat of his red car driving to school like it was yesterday. He was truly a nice guy. Stay strong!

Sherman,
My deepest condolences to you and your family for your loss. I was saddened to hear of his passing. It's because of him I learned to love math. He will be greatly missed by anyone fortunate enough to have ever known him.

The Stecklers were my neighbors when I was between the ages of three and five, and it was then that I first met Hank Bergman. I fondly remember Mr. Bergman as my sixth grade teacher in 1961--1962. I'm grateful to him for introducing us to Algebra, which gave us a head start when we began junior high school. He also taught us to appreciate creative writing. I recall that he read us a passage from an autobiographical sketch he had written. My condolences to Sherman, Harvey and Sharon.
