JOHN SHILEY Obituary

SHILEY, JOHN G., 67, resident of Miami, Florida, passed away on 11/28/10 surrounded by his loving family. You might know John Shiley as an active, raucous, fun loving, even loud at times kind of person who epitomizes what having a good time as a person, family man, and Shriner is all about. You know, the guy with a dog named Bud Weiser. You might know him as the caring Noble who visited you in the hospital or called you when you were sick. He may have answered a legal question for you (pro bono), gave you some investment advice or represented you before a frightening Traffic Court Judge. It could be that you peg him as the eternal optimist who has a genuine love of life, family and the Shrine. You may have ridden with him to Tampa on a hospital run or accompanied him on one of his famous crossings to Bimini. John Glen Shiley was born on March 26, 1943 in Birmingham, Alabama. John graduated from Shades Valley High School, received his undergraduate degree at Howard College, Birmingham, Alabama, and was a member of PI KAPPA PHI Fraternity. In 1968, he received his Juris Doctorate at Cumberland School of Law, Sanford University, in Birmingham. He became a member of the Alabama Bar and began a solo practice. In 1969, John moved to Miami and worked at the First National Bank and Trust of Miami Beach and then for USF&G until 1973. He then became a member of the Florida Bar to practice law. He became a partner in the insurance defense law firm of Ligman, Martin, Shiley and McGee in Coral Gables and practiced for 14 years. He decided to return to a solo practice where he remained throughout his career. This position allowed him to demonstrate his strongest asset, helping others. John was raised a Master Mason in Coral Gables Lodge No. 260 on May 7, 1980, serving as Worshipful Master in 1987. He is a member of both the Miami Scottish Rite and York Rite Bodies, participating in both as a ritualist. He was made a Noble of the A. A. N. O. M. S. in June of 1981 and soon became quite active in many Clubs and Units of the Mahi Temple. He was a member of the Mahi Director's Staff and served as Director and Assistant Director for many years. An avid fisherman, he also devoted a great deal of time through the years to the Mahi Mariners where he served as Commodore in 1995. John was instrumental in resurrecting the Miami Shrine Club and served as its President in 2003 and 2004. He was also a member of the Greeters, Past Masters, and all associated Mahi Shrine Clubs. In January 2005, he was elected Oriental Guide and had been elevated through the chairs to his office of Potentate in 2009. John was a key member of the Shriner Roadrunners volunteering in the transport of seriously injured children requiring specialized medical treatment at Shriner Children's Hospital in Tampa, Florida. In 2010, John was elected Director of ROJ Miami Court 88. He served in that capacity as long as he could. His dedication to Mirth and Merriment will be sadly missed. In 1989 John married his wife and soul mate, Sylvia, and received an instant family. Together, they traveled, worked in his law practice, participated in Shrine functions, and attended First United Methodist Church of Coral Gables. John and Sylvia lived by one rule in life; John desired what® MD2¯ Sylvia wanted and Sylvia desired what John wanted; Each other -- He is survived by children: Mike Moya, Patricia Moya (Carlos), Alexander Moya, and Gregory Moya (Grace). Sisters: Ann Shiley Kreuzinger (Thomas), Margaret Shiley Cubero (Vicente) and Jane Shiley Krblich (Charles) as well as several grandchildren, nieces and nephews. John loved entertaining family gatherings at the family oriented home. John, you will always be cherished by all of us as you have so blessed us with your presence and love. Services will be held at First United Methodist Church of Coral Gables, 536 Coral Way, FL 33134 on Saturday, December 4, 2010, at 11:00 AM. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to his favorite charity, Mahi Shrine Transportation Fund, 1480 N. W. North River Drive, Miami, Florida 33125. Your generous gifts will ensure that John's commitment to these needy children will continue. logo1 View this Guest Book at www. MiamiHerald.com/obituaries.

A wonderful and dedicated Mason, Shriner, and member of the ROJ, but and even better Friend and Brother. Serious about getting whatever was needed done, but also serious about having fun doing it, which made others want to join in the work.

May God Bless his family and his memory and John as He travels ever Eastward. If He is Blessed only half as much as his presence Blessed his friends and Brothers, it will be enormous.

Trying a case against John was a trip. He just kind of smiled his way into the jury's hearts.

I will miss you, my friend.

Sylvia and Family:

John and I were so fortunate to have you and John as our good friends and we always considered ourselves as part of your family. I met John in 1974 and became his secretary at the Law Firm of Ligman Martin, Shiley & McGee. I was a shy young woman at the time but still a little talkative, and John would tell me to go to my desk and type because busy fingers were happy fingers. He never forgot that saying and we had a lot of laughs about it. We always had a close relationship and he adored my son, John, Jr., who he always referred to as Little John up until the day he went to Heaven. John and I were diagnosed with Cancer at the same time and we always talked a few times a week and kept each other's spirits up and he always told me he was peachy keen. He was one of the strongest and kindest individuals we ever knew. We
will cherish all of our happy travels together. John will also remain in our hearts and he will be missed by all who knew him. We love you and you can count on us for anything you need. All our Love, John & Sherry Borsa
