JACOBO, MIGUEL E., M.D. In the arms of his family, Miguel E. Jacobo, M.D., 76, passed away at Mt. Sinai Medical Center on Miami Beach on August 21, 2012. The cause of death was pancreatic cancer, which he fought with dignity for over two years until his last breath. He devoted his career to comforting the sick. He is now at peace. "Miguelito" was born February 14, 1936 in Ciego de Avila, Cuba. In 1963, he married the love of his life, Gloria A., who together with their children, Aleida and Mike, survives him. Miguelito knew from a young age that he wanted to spend his life helping people. He began his medical studies at the University of Habana, those studies were interrupted when he and his young family emigrated from Cuba to Miami and he graduated in 1967 from the University of Madrid. In 1968, he joined Mt Sinai as an internist, where he completed his residency. In 1972, Miguelito became an attending physician in the Anesthesiology Department, and he was also later tapped to serve as Clinical Instructor and Clinical Assistant Professor. As a result, a bond was forged between Miguelito and his many students, who themselves are no physicians, and who remained close to him across the decades and visited with him during his final days. In 1997, he was promoted to Chief Medical Director for the Division of Ambulatory Surgery. He retired due to illness in 2010. On September 6, 2011, the nurses and staff of Mt. Sinai's Ambulatory Surgery Center, the Department of Anesthesiology, his other colleagues and friends and with his family by his side, gathered for a surprise, celebratory farewell. Honoring 44 years of service to Mt. Sinai and its patients, a plaque was dedicated in his honor and is now prominently displayed. Miguelito was a man of simple tastes. He loved to relax at the family's weekend hom in the Florida Keys, where he would take out his boat. He gardened and enjoyed the outdoors. The Jacobo family went on many trips together, with Miguelito leading the way. The last trip they took together and the one they most cherish and will always remember, occurred in October 2011, toward the end, when Gloria, Aleifa, Mike, and Miguelito put everything else aside to be together for a month long Mediterranean cruise. Miguelito is also survived by his brother , Armando F. Jacobo, his many nieces, nephew and cousin and his Mt. Sinai family who worked alongside him for 44 years and whose affection for him was shown in many ways, throughout his career, and more poignantly, when he came himself under their care. Funeral services will be held on August 21, 2012 at Caballero Rivero Woodlawn located at 3344 Southwest 8th Street, starting at 6:00 p.m. A funeral mass will be celebrated at St. Augustine Catholic Church, 1400 Miller Road, Coral Gables, on August 22nd at 10:00 a.m. followed by interment at Miami Meorial Park, 6200 Southwest 77th Avenue, Miami.
