ROSLYN SEIDEL Obituary

SEIDEL, ROSLYN, 89 years old, of North Miami Beach, was born Roslyn Zlotnick in the Bronx in Pelham Parkway. She was a leader of the young Jewish women's movement in the Young Israel of Pelham Parkway. A Hunter College graduate, Roslyn began her career as a teacher in the Jewish day school system in her early 20s, starting the Yonkers Jewish Center. After marrying her husband Irving in 1952, these "young pioneers" moved to the Greater Miami area. It was here that Roslyn began her long commitment to educating Jewish children of all ages. The couple built synagogues and schools throughout their lives in Miami. These institutions still thrive today. Amongst the schools Roslyn taught in, both in the Conservative and Orthodox movements were Temple Beth Torah, Temple Sinai of Hollywood, and the Hebrew Academy of Greater Miami. Roslyn taught adult education for the Jewish Federation for many years as well. Mrs. Seidel was known as the "teacher's teacher". She taught a special course to teachers who needed certification to teach in the Jewish day school system. Additionally, Mrs. Seidel appeared weekly on "A Still Small Voice," the Jewish Federation's weekly television show about the goings on of the Greater Miami Jewish community. Mrs. Seidel was also very involved in young Jewish youth groups such as U.S.Y. Mrs. Seidel was an Orthodox mother and wife who spent many years teaching in the Conservative movement. She and her students never felt a conflict. Her love of religion and spirituality came through loud and clear with her own private label. Her signature booming voice and love for the dramatic shined through in all of her classes. She taught thousands of Jewish children and will be remembered by all. Mrs. Roslyn Seidel is survived by her two daughters, Deborah Chames of Hollywood, Florida and Shira Westreich of New York City. She leaves six grandchildren, two great grandsons, and one great granddaughter. Miami has lost one of its truly great educators and she will be missed by all those who she touched. Funeral services will be on June 16, 2011 at noon at Levitt Weinstein Eternal Light Funeral Service Center, 18840 W. Dixie Hwy., North Miami Beach (305) 932-2700. Donations can be made in her memory to Chesed Avraham Zev, 1190 NE 176th Terrace North Miami Beach, FL 33162, an organization whose mission is to support Jewish educators. My memories of your mother will forever be with me. She was my Hebrew school teacher at Beth Torah and a formidable force in her own right. She was a demanding teacher, and she taught me to always strive for my best. She hosted Shabbat lunches at your house off of 10th Avenue in NMB. As an 11-year-old student of hers, I remember walking there from my own house just a few blocks away with butterlies in my stomach, scared that I would say or do the wrong thing. From Hamotzi to Birchat HaMazon, your mother's example and patience put me at ease. That afternoon almost 50 years ago is one of my lasting and loving memories of her.
May her memory be a blessing to you.
