Our family will always cherish (and miss) that annual summer phone call we would recieve from Sarah and Aunt Tiny saying "we're leaving Taylor Lake and heading your way for a visit!" The kids would wait on the porch with anticipation, watching for the RV to come rolling down the road. That whirl-wind vist was always full of stories, catching up and for some reason, just plain old fashion laughter! You could feel their energy and happiness - it still brings us smiles. Listening to the stories of Sarah and Aunt Tiny and their adventures and travels abroad... how they rigged rollerskate wheels to the bottom of their suitcases, the old van they traveled in, the cabin on the Keys, their dog stories. What a wonderful life...they were two pioneers full of adventure, and a love of sports. They went places and did things that "back in the day" was unheard of. They paved the way for so many...they left a mark, a good mark on everyone they met. While our visits with Sarah and Tiny were never long in duration, our time together will remain timeless in our hearts. That "one big family vacation", the one everyone remembers as "the best one ever" ... ours was the family vacation to Florida. Sarah and Tiny had the kids swimming in the neighbors pool, shrimping, exploring the secrets of the cabin - finding and playing old boardgames from a time long ago... Oh, and the songs! Sarah and Tiny would just break out singing some old song (like Camptown Races) for no real reason... before you knew it, everyone was singing! We will hold on to our memories and share the stories... Sarah will be missed, she was an awesome person...

"Oh Mister Moon, Moon, great big silvery moon, won't you please shine down on, talk about your shining, wont you please shine down on me." A song still sung, a song of the heart sung to the sky. Always in all ways, missed. Joan, the singing lady.

Miss Bennett was my PE Teacher and remember her well. PE was not my favorite class, however by my senior year I had changed my mind thanks to her, although it was not my favorite I truly enjoyed that year.
My condolences and may you have good memories of her.

I loved and respected Sarah Bennett more than I could ever express. I believe that Sarah was the true Teacher of Every Year she spent at Jackson. Her enthusiasm, unflagging energy, devotion, skill, and loyalty are the stuff of legends. She inspired and supported me always. One of my fondest memories is of camping with Sarah and Erma in Colorado. She was very patient with this inexpert fisher-woman. I shall always value and cherish my memories of this extraordinary woman and friend.

Sarah and I have been friends for over 60 years. Everyone in our class of 1946 knew that Sarah was a loved and respected leader who made every gathering a lot of fun. Living across the hall from her my senior year was high adventure. This was repeated the last four years as she has driven from Miami to Waynesville, NC to be a part of the NC Emeritus Alumni Association gathering. She stayed with us for several days on different occasions and almost succeeded in teaching our two dogs to eat ice cream from a teaspoon. Ann Rutland was not so sure this was a good idea. Sarah was always remembering her friends and family at home, and loaded up with fresh tomatoes and peaches to share with them. She loved camping with Erma in her motor home, always taking the dogs along with them. Sarah always asked about my husband, Gene, and they were best of friends. I hope we can stay in touch with Jean, Erma, and the rest of the Bennett family. Our love and prayers to all of you.

Sarah and I played together on all the sports team for girls at Miami High. She was a great competitor and was the captain who lead us to victory. When I attended FSU where she was junior and I was a freshman, we again played as teamates for the Evens. She took me under her wing and what great times we had! Sarah is a legend. She lived with a passion for so many things and influenced the lives of literally hundreds of students and other people with whom she came into contact. Jean and Irma, you are in my thoughts and prayers. Remember all the good times you shared. Gavi (Elaine Gavigan)

Sarah was one of a kind. I will always remember her dog singing Happy Birthday to Randy, my son. When she loaned her Keyes cottage to my husband and me, it was like sleeping in a museum. Everything had a story. Sarah brought so much laughter into our lives. She was always full of energy and ideas. She loved people and dogs. Sarah gave us several pieces of her giant staghorn fern. These have grown and as I see its lovely branches reaching out, I will always remember Sarah. I thank God and my mother, Martha Jane Rutland, for bringing Sarah into our lives.

When we think about Sarah Bennett's 86 years: first came date of her birth ending with the date she deceased. What mattered most about the dates is the DASH between… all those years. It was the DASH which represented all the time she spent alive on earth, and not what she has taken with her; but, what she has left behind. Those of us who loved Sarah Bennett, and knew her, are familiar with what that DASH is really worth: the many young people who benefited from her teaching and mentoring...for many of us, what we have become we can only say THANK YOU MOST GRACIOUS LADY! For you it mattered how you lived, and how much you loved your family, your work and your friends. How grateful I am to be amongst those for whom you spent some of your DASH.

Sarah Bennett charted a path for girls in an era when college degrees and sports participation were not viewed as important goals for young women. I was blessed to have attended Miami Jackson High School. Sarah Bennett helped me to chart my future and follow my dreams.
