SARAH ANDERSON Obituary

ANDERSON, SARAH SIKES, of Coral Gables, died suddenly and unexpectedly on May 28 in Oslo, Norway while on vacation with her husband John. She was on a trip that she had long planned for and looked forward to, but the day after arriving in Oslo she suffered a heart attack and died within hours. She was born in Washington, D.C. April 3, 1939 to Fred and Evelyn Sikes. She grew up in Clewiston, Florida and attended the University of Florida. After marrying John in 1962 they moved to Coral Gables where she has always been active in community affairs. She was instrumental in having Coral Way in Coral Gables declared an historic roadway. She also played a major role in seeing that standard residential street lights were replaced with old fashioned light fixtures that matched the City's original ones. She served on the Coral Gables Historic Preservation Board, as well as the Building & Zoning Board. In former years she was very active in the Museum of Science, serving as President and on the Board of Directors. She has filled the office of treasurer in numerous organizations. To quote one of her nieces, Julie "Sarah may have been small in stature but she was large in intelligence, strong will, purpose, integrity, knowledge, presence, humor and natural good looks. She was 'larger than life!'. That's the way I will always think of her and I am glad I knew her. She will be greatly missed!". To quote another niece, Sara, "Aunt Sarah lived her life on her terms, which I think is a remarkable way to live." Sarah is survived by husband John and sons Matt, Stephen (Shawn) and their families including three grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. She is now and will continue to be sorely missed. Donations in her memory to either The National Trust for Historic Preservation or the charity of your choice will be appreciated. View this Guest Book at www. MiamiHerald.com/obituaries.

Memories and Condolences

Not sure what to say?

July 8, 2011

John and Stephen, We are at the Leslies in Clolorado for a few days and they just told us about Sarah's recent death. We are so sorry. She was an amazing woman and one I really respected. She always backed up her beliefs, not just with words, but with action. Although we did not see each other often, I always enjoyed the time we did spend together. Our family sends all of you our love, prayers, sympathy and understanding.

To,John,Stephen and family. My memories of Sarah will never be forgotten. As her hairdresser for 32 years, we had shared so many moments of laughter and tears, she was my confident and friend, and had a great sense of humor. I'm gonna miss her so much. I loved that woman, & am really gonna miss her.My condolences-Steve Berman

John
So very sorry to hear about Sarah. On my many trips to Miami it was always a high point to visit with the two of you. Remember those dinners at Ruth’s Chris and Fox’s. And oh yes, those political debates, you and me on one side and Sarah on the other, more than holding her own. Treasured memories of a long time friend will always be with me.
