BURTON, Shirley (nee Kress), passed away peacefully on Tuesday, April 23, 2013, surrounded by family after a long illness. She is survived by two sons, Dr. Edward M. Burton (Laura), and Richard J. Burton, Esquire (Truly), grandchildren Paula Burton Herron (Brian), Adam Burton and Marc Burton, and great grandson, Jackson Herron. A Brooklyn native, she went to New York City public schools and graduated from Hunter College. At 19, she married Melvin F. Burton, contributed to the war effort, and after World War II, moved to South Florida, where they made their home. She considered herself a Miami Beach resident and was a pioneering woman and realtor, selling homes to rising middle class families in the then-new communities of Treasure Island, North Bay Village and Normandy Isle. After the passing of her first husband, she married Murray Silber. Shirley was grandmother to Murray's two grandchildren, David and Carlin. She was active in the Women's Auxiliary of the Optimists' and Lions' Clubs, and helped raise funds for those with vision impairments. She was a devoted wife and mother, and worked to ensure that her sons were highly educated. She enjoyed traveling, the theater, an active social life and her family. She will be missed by those who knew and loved her. Services will be held 10:00 am, Thursday, April 25th, Riverside Gordon Aventura Funeral Home, 20955 Biscayne Blvd., Aventura.
