BURNS Janet Bird Burns, 87 years, of Marathon, FL, died Dec. 17. Friends may call at the Capaul Funeral Home, Ida, MI, Thursday, Dec. 26, from 2-8 p.m. She will lie in state Dec. 27, at Light of Christ Parish-St. Alphonsus Church, Deerfield, MI, from 10 a.m. until the Mass of Resurrection at 11 a.m. The Rev. Dan Lannen will officiate. Burial will be in Pleasant View Cemetery, Petersburg, MI Born Feb. 28, 1926, in Fairfield, OH, Janet was the daughter of Alfred and Theresa (Kibler) Bird. She was adopted by James Clifford and Agnes (Smith) Brown, in August 1928. Janet was the Valedictorian of the 1944 Class at Petersburg High School. She worked at the Willow Run Bomber Plant during the summers of her junior and senior school years. Janet married Richard Burns on Dec. 27, 1944, in St. Alphonsus Church. He died March 25, 1986. She attended the University of Michigan for a short time to become a secretary, and was a Bookkeeper and Secretary for the Summerfield School for 25 years. At the age of 72, in 2001, she was a few credits shy for an Associates Degree in Fine Arts from Monroe County Community College, where she was a member of the Phi Theta Kappa International Honor Society. She won 12 ribbons in local art shows including an award for Best in Show. She moved to Marathon, FL, in 2003. Janet was a member of St. Alphonsus Church, Deerfield; the DAR both in Monroe County and in Florida; the VFW Auxiliary in Petersburg, MI,; and the Fishermen's Hospital Ladies Auxiliary and Florida Keys Watercolor Society in Marathon, FL. Surviving are sons, Duane "Rick" (Debra) Burns, John Burns, Dr. Scott (Patrick Bunyan) Burns; daughter, Tami (Frank) Demkowski; brother, James Bird; sixteen grandchildren, seventeen great grandchildren, and one great great grandchild. She was preceded in death by her husband, a son, Ronald; a grandson, Jeremy; three brothers, Warren, Ronald, and Darrell Bird; and a sister, Mary Griggers.
