CALVERT, WILLIAM PRESTON MD. William (Bill) Preston Calvert, MD was born in Warrensburg, MO and grew up a "proud mid-westerner" in Richmond, MO on Calvert Farms. He spent his childhood exploring nature, raising pigeons, and riding his favorite draft horse. By his late teens a passion was brewing and Bill chose to follow in his Grandfather's footsteps by studying medicine. He attended Massachusetts Institute of Technology as an under-graduate and then continued on to the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine. His Internal Medicine residency at the Pennsylvania Hospital in Philadelphia, however, was interrupted by the early Vietnam War and he served as a Flight Surgeon at Clark Air Force Base in the Philippines for two years. When his military service was completed, Bill returned to the Pennsylvania Hospital to complete his residency as Chief Resident. During his time in the Philippines he developed a love for tropical nature. This eventually led Bill to the University of Miami, where he completed a Fellowship in G.I. Medicine, finished a residency in Radiology and, ultimately, became Board-Certified in Radiology and Nuclear Medicine. Bill was a long time resident of Miami and the Florida Keys where he practiced Radiology for more than 25 years in and around the area. During his time in South Florida, he served intervals as Chief of Radiology at Larkin Hospital (Miami) and the Community Health Center (South Dade); spent time on the faculty of the University of Miami School of Medicine, Department of Radiology; and served many times as Locum Tenens Radiologist at Mariners, Fishermen's and Keys Community Hospitals in the Florida Keys. Two of his favorite post retirement tenures were at the Indian Health Service (Ship Rock, NM) and Baptist Hospital (Homestead, FL). He was also active in the Dade County Medical Association and the South Miami Medical Forum, and was proud to be noted in Who's Who of America. Additionally, Bill was a long-time member of the Explorers Club of South Florida and the Marathon Sail and Power Squadron. Bill is survived by his sister, Edith Calvert Spees of Carbondale, IL; brother, Clay Calvert of Leawood, KS; wife, Katie Calvert of Henderson, NV; daughter and son-in-law, Rebecca and Keith Chura, of Henderson, NV; son and daughter-in-law, Christopher and Carolyn Calvert of Los Angeles, CA, and beloved granddaughters, Claire and Georgia Calvert and Kayla and Sophia Chura. Services will be private.
