Bert Bernstein

BERNSTEIN, Bert 88, passed away peacefully at home on Saturday December 5th. Beloved husband of Bea (Greenberg), loving father of Jeff (Edna) Bernstein, Jack (Chris) Bernstein, and Melinda Bernstein. Proud grandfather to Jonathan, Melissa and Jake Bernstein, Justin Freiman and Jennifer Romanoff (Gedalia). Loved by his nephew Michael (Lauri) Bernstein and Niece Mindy (Joe) Mathos and their children. He was predeceased by his brothers Jack and Paul, sister Fay Plum. Born in New York City to Minnie and Sam Bernstein, raised in Huntington, Long Island, he came to Florida with his parents as a teenager in 1943. Graduated the University of Miami in 1951 and married his high school sweetheart, Bea Greenberg, who he first met at her 14th birthday party. He was employed by the City of Miami Beach Police Department for 30 years, retiring as a Detective Lieutenant. He initiated the first Narcotics Division - Intelligence Unit, for the Miami Beach Police Department after attending training at the Federal Narcotics Bureau in Washington D.C. He was a lifelong golfer who attained that once in a lifetime hole-in-one. At age 85, he wrote a book about his many experiences in the Miami Beach Police Department. The book is entitled, "My Life in Crime." He will be forever in the hearts of his great family and many dear friends of more than 60 years. The best times of his life beyond marrying Bea was the births of his children, grandchildren and the many celebrations of life at the family or friends' get-togethers where there was laughs, lively chatter, storytelling and love. Services will be held on Tuesday December 8th at 10:30 AM at the Star of David Chapel at Bailey Memorial Gardens, 7701 Bailey Road in North Lauderdale. Interment will follow at Mt. Nebo at 5505 NW 3rd Street in Miami.
