John "Cactus Jack" Overton(1923-2013)

John "Cactus Jack" Overton, age 90, who was born Jan. 22, 1923, in Lakeview, Ore., to Oley Olsen Overton and Charlotte Fine was called home on Feb. 22, 2013, in Medford, Ore.
John joined the Marine Corps in 1942, becoming a staff sergeant serving his country in World War II until he was honorably discharged in 1946 with two Purple Heart medals and the Navy Cross.
John married Verda Faye Overton, his wife of 65 years, on March 1, 1947, in Redding, Calif., where they moved to Lake County and then finally to Klamath County in the late 1960's until he moved to Medford in the mid-2000s.
John was mainly a small rancher for most of his life, but did many jobs to support his family. He loved to spend time with family, go hunting, fishing and camping, and being outdoors. John was an active member of the Marine Corps League, American Legion, and Veterans of Foreign Wars, continually planning and helping with events that had to do with veterans.
He is survived by his children John and Cindy Overton, Jaymie and Paula Overton, Jackie and Nick Castriotta, Joanne Carroll and June Perez, four brothers, four sisters, 11 grandchildren, and 12-great-grandchildren.
John was preceded in death by his wife Verda Faye Overton, parents Oley Overton and
Charlotte Fine, daughter Julia Brennan, and sisters Dorothy Beam and Dora Widom.
A graveside service will be 3 p.m. April 12 at Eagle Point National Cemetery and a memorial service at 1 p.m. April 13 at the Klamath Tribute Center.
