Phillip David Parsons crossed over April 21, 2013.
Phil was born in Medford, Ore., May 27, 1933, to Gwen and Floyd Parsons. He graduated from Grants Pass High School in 1951 and attended Southern Oregon University prior to being drafted and enlisting in the Air Force in 1952. He served in the Air Force from 1952 to 1956 and was stationed in Tokyo, Japan, where he met and married Lea Dean Schwartz, who was teaching at a Department of Defense school.
Following his discharge from military service, Phil attended Oregon State University, where he played third base for the Beavers and graduated with a degree in business administration. He worked for many years as the executive director of the United Way in Klamath Falls, Ore., and as the associate director of the United Way in Sacramento, Calif.
He led a life of adventure, climbing Mt. Shasta, Mt. Hood and Mt. Rainier numerous times in addition to most of the other volcanos in the Cascade Range. He trekked to the base camp of Mt. Everest with his climbing partner Everett "Geno" Howard and cycled three times across the United States following the northern, central and southern routes and also from Canada to the Mexican border along the Pacific Coast.
He is survived by his three children and their spouses, Dave and Chris of Yreka, Calif.; Rob and Melinda of Sitka, Alaska; and Virginia "Ginny" and Scott Cramblitt of Springfield, Ore. He also was fondly known as "Grandpappy" to his grandchildren Alexandra, Miranda, Kincaid, Delaney, and Randy.
