James W. "Jim" Elder was born April 5, 1934, in Lakeview, Ore., to Elmer Elder and Betty Sherman Elder. He passed away May 23, 2013, a lifelong resident of Lakeview.

Jim was raised in Lake County, growing up and working on the family ranches in Valley Falls, Paisley and Bly. He graduated from Lakeview High School in 1953.
He joined the United States Marine Corps in the fall of 1953, serving honorably and earning the rank of sergeant until his discharge in April 1958.
Jim married Betty Jo Bradley July 23, 1958, in Reno, Nev. They settled in Lake County with Jim working at the Bureau of Land Management, Lakeview Lumber and finally at the Fremont Saw Mill beginning in 1962.
Jim and Betty Jo settled on H Street in Lakeview, raising three boys, Ed, Joe and John.
He worked at Fremont until his retirement in 1998, becoming a certified lumber grader and winning a national award. He coached his boys and many others in Little League Baseball. He was a life member of the Lakeview Elks Lodge and on the local planning commission, serving as commissioner. Jim was an avid fly fisherman, hunter and outdoorsman, known for his sharp-shooting skills. He truly enjoyed spending time with family, especially when fishing, hunting and camping, or watching Oregon football.
Jim was preceded in death by his parents, wife Betty Jo, son Joe and sister Sally.
He is survived by his son and daughter-in-law Ed and Nancy Elder, son John Elder, grandchildren James, Jessica, Kevin and Brian Elder, and numerous other members of his extended family.
