Mary Fran Hammond, 91, died in Klamath Falls March 19. She was born to Clarence "Jerry" and Mary Sharp Jan. 12, 1923, in Terrebonne, Ore. She moved to Merrill during high school and continued her education, pursuing a nursing degree from Emanuel Hospital in Portland. After graduating with a bachelor's degree, she served two years in World War II as a second lieutenant nurse. While home on leave, she met her husband, James "Jim" Hammond. They were married Jan. 5, 1947, in St. Augustine's Catholic Church in Merrill and had three sons, Bill, Jerry and Dennis. Throughout her life, Mary enjoyed opportunities to volunteer as well as host social events for her bridge club and garden club. Her passion was gardening and her extraordinary talent created many beautiful gardens to admire. She also enjoyed traveling, near and far, with friends and family. She traveled most recently to Sunriver last year to celebrate her 90th birthday with her family. She is survived by a son, Bill Hammond, of Sparks, Nev.; grandsons, Cory Hammond of Bend and Neil Hammond of Corvallis; granddaughters, Lindsey O'Brien of Portland and Becky Sanderson of Fayetteville, Ark.; great-grandsons, Logan Sanderson of Fayetteville, Ark., Gabe Hammond of Bend, Sam Hammond of Medford and Corbin Hammond of Corvallis; great-granddaughters, Maggie Hammond of Corvallis, Quinn and Kacie O'Brien of Portland. She was preceded in death by her husband, James Hammond; sons, Jerome and Dennis and a grandson, Trevor Krogh. Her independent spirit, sense of humor, generosity and commitment to family will be missed. Memorials may be made to the Shriner's Children Hospital Services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday, March 26, at Sacred Heart Church. A reception will be at Quail Park at Crystal Terrace. Ward's Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
