Mary Kathryn "Kay" Harshbarger left her earthly home on Sept. 12, 2012.
During the preceding days, numerous family members were able to be at her bedside to express their love for her and thank her for being a positive influence in their lives. Her daughter Jo was holding her hand when she left for her heavenly home.
Kay was born July 4, 1916, in Owosso, Mich., to Alva Freyhof Wright and Harry Wright. She was just 2 years old when her mother died, a victim of the "Great Influenza Epidemic." She was then cared for by her father and close family relatives. When she was 12, her father married Ethel Cole. She gained new siblings Leslie, Howard, Evelyn, and Violet. They all remained close friends until their passing.
Kay graduated from high school in Bryon, Mich., in 1932. She worked as a housekeeper for $1 a week until her marriage to Fairbanks Bellinger led to a move to Klamath Falls in 1936. She was a whiz at numbers and was employed as a bookkeeper for many years. She retired after 25 years with Klamath Gas. Also, a few years later, she accepted an offer for a temporary position at Nyback's Florist, which lasted 20 years, ending on her 90th birthday.
She volunteered her bookkeeping services to the Eagles Lodge and St. Mark's Church. She was a talented musician, loved to sing and dance, played the piano, and was choir director at St. Paul's Church for many years. She was very community minded. An active member of the Eagles Lodge most of her adult life, holding local and state offices with honor and distinction.
Her marriage to Herb Harshbarger was filled with good times, camping, hunting, fishing and parties at the Eagles Lodge. He joined her traveling around the state as she performed duties with the lodge. His passing left a void in her life, which was filled by many social activities supported by her daughter and son-in-law Jo and Elmer, including the trips and many cruises. She especially enjoyed those to Alaska and the Panama Canal.
To know her was to love her.
