Mildred Winchester Brattain Harvey passed away due to natural causes in Corvallis, Ore., on Feb. 13, 2013. She was 88 years old.
She was born in Lakeview, Ore., on Sept. 4, 1924, to Richard and Agnes Winchester. She had two brothers Jack and Roy. She spent her childhood in Lakeview and Crooked Creek. She graduated from Lakeview High School in 1942, received a bachelor's degree in biology from Oregon State University in 1946 and later a master's degree in education from Southern Oregon State College.
She married Paul Edward Brattain (1925-1970) of Paisley, Ore., in September 1946 and had three children David, Ariel (1949-1981) and Janna. She married Glenn Harvey (1924-2011), also of Paisley, in July 1972.
Mildred was an active member of the Paisley community and worked for the Paisley School, first as the clerk, then later became the librarian and high school counselor. She was a devoted advocate of educational achievement for all Paisley students. She retired from the school in 1982.
She was active in the Eastern Star, 4-H, Girl Scouts and Camp Fire Girls as well as a supporter of all school activities. She served on the Bernard Daly Scholarship board. She enjoyed traveling and saw many parts of the USA and the world. She loved reading, gardening, playing bridge and time spent with her family.
Mildred and her late husband Glenn Harvey gifted the Harvey Ranch in Summer Lake, Ore., to Oregon State University in 1987. They retired from ranching and moved to Corvallis in 2000. They were avid fans of the OSU Beavers and supported the animal sciences department. They created four endowed scholarships at OSU as well as an endowed professorship in animal sciences.
Survivors include her children David Brattain of Fredericksburg, Texas, and Janna Brewster of Juneau, Alaska, six grandchildren and four great-grandchildren along with many friends and relatives.
She will be missed by all who knew her.
