Billy Colsher Hobbs

1923 - 2017

HOBBS, Billy Colsher, age 93, passed this life on Sunday, Feb. 26, 2017, at his home. Mr. Hobbs was born on Aug. 19, 1923, in Moore County, Tennessee, the son of the late Lacy Hobbs and Nell Parks Hobbs. He graduated from Moore County High School in 1942, and served in World War II from Jan. 12, 1943 to Dec. 24, 1945. Mr. Hobbs served in the Philippines during the battle of Leyte and Luzon. After the war he worked at the Glove Factory in Lynchburg and then was the parts manager of Tullahoma Motors. In the mid 1950's, he and his wife, Ruby, whom he married on June 2, 1950, bought Cedar Lane Market in Tullahoma from Ruby's parents, Floyd and Mary Majors. Being the owner of the market, Mr. Hobbs watched several generations grow up and had nicknames for all the kids..."Hot Rod and Butterball," and always made sure there was candy for everyone. As a University of Tennessee fan, he had held season tickets since the 1950's, and followed the team to bowl games. Mr. Hobbs shared his tickets with many-young and old. He enjoyed hunting, fishing and water sports, as well as having his family and friends all together. He loved gardening on his plantation and supervising the putting up of vegetables. Mr. Hobbs also loved his old 1985, Dodge truck which he called, "The Monster." He was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Tullahoma, as well as the VFW and American Legion. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers, Charles and Jack Hobbs; an infant brother and sister; three sons-in-law, Bruce Sisk, John Forsyth and Anthony Lowhorn; and one grandson-in-law, Mike Nix. Mr. Hobbs is survived by his loving wife of 66 years, Ruby Hobbs; one brother Herby Hobbs; three daughters, Linda Sisk, Billie Forsyth and Ivy Lowhorn; seven grandchildren, Susie (Mark) Rambo, Stacey Nix, Dylan Forsyth, Lacey and Aly Forsyth, Ryan Lowhorn and Aaron (Ana) Lowhorn; eight great-grandchildren, Maggie and Abbie Rambo, Colton, Carly and Caroline Nix and Lexi, Audrey and Ansley Lowhorn; and numerous nieces and nephews. The family would also like to thank Mr. Hobbs' sitters, Terri Parker, Karen House and Mike Relva. Visitation with the family will be held on Tuesday, Feb. 28, 2017, from 5 to 8 p.m. at Kilgore Funeral Home in Tullahoma. Funeral services will be conducted on Wednesday, March 1, 2017, at 1 p.m. in the Kilgore Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Paul Purdue officiating. Interment will follow in the Lynchburg City Cemetery.
