SHERMAN - A Memorial Service honoring the life of Mr. Donald Elmo Lankford, of Sherman, will be at 3 p.m. Saturday October 27, 2012 at the Cravens Funeral Home Chapel, located at 225 W. Brockett St. in Sherman.
Mr. Lankford, 81, passed away on Sunday October 20, 2012 at Sam Rayburn Memorial V.A. Hospital in Bonham. He was born on February 28, 1931 in Vallejo, Calif. to Lemuel Elmo Lankford and Coquilla Mae Miller. He was a member of the Denison High School graduating class of 1948. Donald earned an associate's degree in Drafting at Abilene Christian College. Later he served in the U.S. Navy
during the Korean War
and was honorably discharged after four years. He was a sheet metal fabricator, specializing in architectural design. This skill allowed him to build his own airplane, the Thorpe T-18 which he personally flew for more than 1,000 hours. Don was also a member of the Sherman Elks Lodge
. Mr. Lankford was a very talented and gifted man; he had many passions including airplanes, woodwork, and singing.
Donald is survived by his wife, Lynette Lewis Lankford; sons, Gaynael Franklin Lankford and Michael Lankford; daughters, Lisa Simmons, LeAnn Lankford and Melanie Farmer; sister, Carol "Jeanie" Burtis; five grandchildren, one great grandchild, along with other relatives and friends.
The Lankford family is under the personal care of the Cravens Funeral Home in Sherman.
