SHERMAN - A Life Celebration for Mrs. Johnnie B. Gittens "Mama G," age 80, of Sherman, Texas, will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday at Friendly Church of God in Christ, located at 711 E. Lamar St. in Sherman. Pastor Dwight Thomas of God's House of Faith and Worship Center will officiate along with Elder Robert Softly of Friendly Church of God in Christ as the eulogist. Public visitation will be on Friday from 10 a.m. until 7 p.m. with the family present to receive friends and guests from 7 p.m. until 8 p.m. at the Cravens Funeral Home, located at 225 W. Brockett St. in Sherman.
Mrs. Johnnie B. Gittens was born August 26, 1933 in Sherman to the parentage of Steve L. Scruggs and Adena Woodrow. She graduated from Fred Douglas High School in Sherman and was later united in marriage to John Gittens. To this union, two children were born: Gary Steven Gittens and Gregory Scott Gittens.
At an early age Mrs. Gittens accepted Christ as her personal savior and began to work in Friendly Church of God in Christ. She was employed at Texas Instruments for over 20 years where she later retired. Everyone knew Mrs. Gittens as "Mama G;" she demonstrated love and commitment towards her family and friends. She enjoyed gardening, cooking, upholstery, cake decorating, poetry, and floral arranging. Her passion for these areas contributed in organizing many church, family, and wedding events.
Her transition from this life came June 12, 2014 in Sherman, Texas. Preceding her in death are her parents, husband, John Gittens, four brothers and three sisters.
Left with cherished memories are her sons: John Gittens Sr. (Phyllis) of New York, Gary Steven Gittens (Patrice) and Gregory Scott Gittens (Toni) both of Sherman; grandchildren: Jarod Gittens of New York, Shalyn Hernandez (Tony), Joshua Gittens, Christopher Gittens, Alexis Gittens, Austin Gittens, Kristen Gittens and Tori Gittens all of Sherman; great grandchild Antonio Hernandez; brother L.W. Scruggs (Nellie) of Sherman; sisters: Mildred Wilson, Katherine Winchester (Wayne) and Linda Southern (Nathaniel) all of Sherman; a host of nieces, nephews and relatives.
The Gittens family is under the personal care of Cravens Funeral Home.
