Orville Dean Jones

SHERMAN - Orville Dean Jones died August 15, 2013 after a courageous battle with cancer. Services will be under the direction of Stewart Funeral Home in Tyler. The Funeral Service will be 2 p.m. on Aug. 19 at Park Cities Baptist Church in Dallas. Graveside Services are scheduled for 1 p.m. on Aug. 20 at Cathedral in the Pines Cemetery in Tyler.

He was born on Dec. 20, 1934 in Panola County, and was preceded in death by his parents, Troy and Inez Jones of Carthage. He graduated from Carthage High School and Stephen F. Austin University with a BBA degree in 1957. He joined the United States Marine Corps and served active and reserve duty until 1968 where he reached the rank of Captain upon discharge. He married Joan Welch of Carthage in 1958. He began his career in the Insurance industry in 1961 with Employers Insurance of Texas in Tyler and in 1970 managed their National General Agency in Dallas. After leaving Employers Insurance, he was active in insurance brokering, underwriting and management with National Insurance Managers Inc. and the Surplus Lines Division of Unigard Insurance Co. He joined the Crump Companies in 1984 and in 1986 became Executive Vice-President and National Director of the Crump E&S Group. He retired from Crump as Chairman and CEO in 1999. In 2000, he joined CRC Insurance Services, Inc. in Birmingham, Alabama as a member of the Senior Management Group, Board of Directors and Assistant to the CEO. In addition, his responsibilities included the MGA operations of CRC which consist of Southern Cross Underwriters and TAPCO Underwriters.

He served the insurance industry that he loved as President of the National Association of Professional Surplus Lines Offices in 1998 and served a number of years on the Board of Directors and different committees. He was a member of the original NAPSLO Education Committee where he served as Chairman and developed the NAPSLO Advanced School. In addition, he served on the Board of Directors of the Texas Surplus Lines Stamping Office and was Chairman in 1995. He was presently serving on the Board of MHBT of Dallas.

He was an avid business man as well as a loving and generous husband, father and grandfather. He loved sports, enjoyed playing golf and especially hunting with his friends and family at the Horwood River Ranch. Some of his happiest moments were spending time with his children and grandchildren. He loved taking them on trips and attending all of their activities. He loved traveling, both business and pleasure, and made many friends across the U.S. and Europe. He and his wife, Joan, had lived in Sherman, Texas since 2000 and had recently moved into their new home where he enjoyed his last days on the porch overlooking Lake Palestine with family and friends. He was so loved by his family and friends. His love of life and contagious laugh will be missed.

He is survived by his wife, Joan, of 55 years and his three children: Brad Jones of Bullard, Texas; Tonya Hudgins and husband Harry Hudgins of Sherman; Tammy Milliorn and husband David Milliorn of Dallas. He had five grandchildren: Garrett and Hayley Jones, Trey Hudgins, Kailey and Megan Milliorn; one brother, Clayton D. Jones and wife Suzanne of Plano, Texas; Brother-in-Law and Sister-in-Law Bill and Barbara Davis of Bullard, and several nieces and nephews.

Honorary Pallbearers will be Tom Curtin, Preston Gough, Bill Henry, John Latham, Charles Reeves, Max Williamson, Ron Helveston, Mike Johnston, Charles Wood, Mac Wesson, John Wood, Marcus Payne, Dan Browning, Johnny Fulkerson, Gary Westphalen, Kevin Brooks, Dave Hartoch, Bill Hale and Hugh Rinkle.
