R.B. McGowen

SHERMAN - Funeral services for Russell Bell McGowen Jr. will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday December 5 at Waldo Funeral Home. Rev. Neill Morgan of the Covenant Presbyterian Church will officiate. Mr. McGowen, 84, passed away Sunday, December 1, 2013 at the Crawford Street Place Assisted Living Center in Denison.

R.B. was born May 7, 1929 in Santa Anna to the late R.B. McGowen Sr. and Anna (Scott) McGowen. On June 18, 1946, he married Jacquelyn Newton in Monahans. They were married until her passing in May 2010.

Mr. McGowen was a graduate of Texas A&M University and the University of Texas School of Law. During his lifetime, Mr. McGowen sold insurance, practiced law, ran a bank, prospected for oil, gas, and sulfur, produced three motion pictures and wrote several novels. While serving as District Attorney for the 143rd Judicial District of Texas, Mr. McGowen was the prosecutor who indicted and tried infamous outlaw Billy Sol Estes resulting in his first appearance before the United States Supreme Court. While serving as Texas River Commissioner for the Pecos River, Mr. McGowen again appeared before the United States Supreme Court when on behalf of Texas, sued New Mexico and Colorado resulting in the payment of millions of dollars to Texas for withholding river water from Texas.

Mr. McGowen was an avid golfer and played primarily at Woodlawn Country Club.

Mr. McGowen was preceded in death by his wife, Jacquelyn McGowen. He is survived by two sons, R.B. Jerry McGowen and wife Joyce, and Jack McGowen and wife Melissa, both of Sherman; four grandchildren, Jamie Peden, Kelly Audas, Matthew McGowen, Susan McGowen; and five great-grandchildren, Tyler Peden, Brooke Peden, Abby Audas, Austin Audas, and Jack Scott McGowen.
