CALERA, Okla. - Funeral services for Shirley Davis-Quaid, 72, will be held at 10 a.m. Friday, Feb. 21, 2014, at the Calera Church of Christ in Calera, Okla. Visitation will be held from 6-8 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 20, 2014, at Cunningham Funeral Home in Colbert, Okla.
Shirley died Monday, Feb. 17, 2014, at her home in Bonham, Texas, following a year-long battle with cancer.
The former Shirley Ruth Green was born June 20, 1941, in Dallas, Texas, to Claude and Iva (Malone) Green.
Her family moved to Buffalo, Texas, when she was an infant, and that's where she started school. When she was in the fourth grade, the family moved back to Dallas; and she graduated from W.W. Samuel High School in 1959.
She attended what was then Abilene Christian College and later earned her bachelor's degree from Southeastern State College (now Southeastern Oklahoma State University).
On Aug. 24, 1962, she and Guy Gaylon Davis were married in Abilene, Texas. He was in the U.S. Army, and they were stationed at Fort Ord, Calif.; Munich, Germany; and Fort Bragg, N.C.
Following his honorable discharge from the Army they made their home briefly in Dallas before settling outside Calera in 1970 and raising their family there.
Mr. Davis served approximately four years as minister for the Calera Church of Christ before being elected in 1974 to the Oklahoma House of Representatives. He served 16 years in the House and died on July 15, 1994.
On Aug. 12, 2000, Shirley married Ronnie Quaid in Calera. He soon became the minister for the Commerce Street Church of Christ in Gainesville, Texas, where they lived until moving to Bonham in October of 2012.
In addition to being a homemaker and "Nana" to her grandchildren, Shirley was retired from the Child Welfare Division of the Oklahoma Department of Human Services after 25 years of service.
She was a longtime member of the Church of Christ.
Her services will be conducted by Howard Horton, minister of the Bells Church of Christ in Bells, Texas, and her son-in-law, Judge Spanky Carter of Mulberry, Texas.
Burial will be in the Rosehill Cemetery in Calera, Okla., under direction of Cunningham Funeral Home of Colbert, Okla.
Pallbearers will be Trey Carter, Casey Carter, Madison Carter, Damon Green, Mike Talley, and Aaron Krejci. Honorary pallbearers will be Jeremy Lackey, Walter Vincent, Art Anglin, Preston Blackstone, and Tommy Wade. Ushers will be Burt Quaid and Mike Bodine.
Mrs. Quaid is survived by her second husband, Ronnie Quaid, of the home in Bonham; three children, Karen Talley and her husband, Mike, of Wylie, Texas, Guy Davis Jr. and wife Melinda, of Corpus Christi, Texas, and Donna Carter and husband Spanky, of Mulberry, Texas; and three step-children, Burt Quaid and wife Heather, of Caddo, Okla., Susannah Bodine and husband Michael, of Boswell, Okla., and Sherri Quaid, of New York City, N.Y.
Other survivors include one sister, Joyce LaFerne Beltz, Highland Village, Texas; one brother, Gerald Green, Clinton, Okla.; seven grandchildren, Jeremy Lackey, Navasota, Texas, Trey Carter and his wife, Allison, Bonham, Texas, Jessica Carter, Washington, D.C., Casey Carter, Mulberry, Texas, Madison Carter, Austin, Texas, Lindsay Carter, Mulberry, Texas, and Marissa Davis, Corpus Christi, Texas; and four step-grandchildren, Elizabeth Quaid and Patrick Quaid, both of Caddo, Okla., and Dillon and Brittany Bodine, both of Boswell, Okla.
In addition to her first husband, Mrs. Quaid was preceded in death by her parents, Claude and Iva Green, and one brother, Billy Wayne Green.
