Ted Nurre

SHERMAN - Bernard "Ted" Nurre, a long-time resident of Sherman, passed away on Saturday, May 4, 2013. He is survived by Jerre, his wife of 70 years, his children Mike, Pat, Richard, Sara, Susan and Becky, 12 grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.

Nurre, son of the late BT and Hazel Nurre, was born in Chicago and moved to Dallas in 1936. He graduated from Forest Avenue High, Dallas in 1941 and joined the Army Air Corps in 1942. Later he attended SMU and graduated from Southeastern Oklahoma State University, Durant, Okla. in 1975 with a BBS in Business.

Nurre retired from the United States Air Force in 1973 following a military career spanning 31 years. He was a tailgunner on a B-17 Bomber flying 30 missions over Germany during World War II, and also served in Vietnam. He was stationed at Perrin Air Force Base in Sherman for 10 years.

Following retirement, Nurre taught ROTC at Sherman High School for three years, then worked for the Grayson Housing Authority, retiring as Executive Director in 1989.

He volunteered with the Boy Scouts of America program for almost 25 years serving as Cubmaster, Cub Scout Leader trainer and other volunteer positions. He is a recipient of the BSA Silver Beaver Award for his voluntary service.

A long-time member of the First United Methodist Church in Sherman, Nurre was a charter member of the Perrin Air Force Base Historical Museum, serving as membership chairman for several years.

A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. on Friday, May 10 at First United Methodist Church, 401 N. Elm Street, in Sherman. A reception will follow at Binkley Hall at the church.

In memory of Mr. Nurre, gifts may be made to the Perrin Historical Museum at 436 McCullum Avenue, Denison, TX 75020 or to First United Methodist Church in Sherman.
