Wesley Lawrence "Larry" Evans(1949-2012)

DENISON - Wesley Lawrence "Larry" Evans passed away Saturday, Nov. 24, 2012 at Texoma Medical Center in Denison.

Mr. Evans was born July 14, 1949 in Mexia to Wesley and Sudie Jackson Evans. When he was 3 years old, his father, Wesley, was killed while serving in the Air Force. Larry was raised by his dear stepdad, Jack H. Floyd. He graduated valedictorian of his class in 1967 from Mexia High School where he lettered in four sports his senior year. Larry proudly served as a Boy Scout, president of his senior class and was voted class favorite. He attended TCU where he received a football scholarship and graduated with cum laude status in 1971. At TCU, he was a member of the Phi Delta Theta fraternity, of which he served as president his senior year. Larry was also active in Fellowship of Christian Athletes. While attending TCU, Larry met and fell in love with Donna Dossey, whom he married on Aug. 12, 1972 in Denison. Larry continued his education by attending Baylor Law School where he again graduated cum laude in November 1973.

After completing law school, Larry and Donna settled in Denison. He joined the law practice of Kennedy & Minshew in Sherman where he worked for seven years until he opened his solo practice in Denison, where he practiced for 30 years until retirement in 2011. Larry prided himself on having the same secretary for the entire run of his solo practice. His practice consisted of real estate, probate, contracts, and closely held corporations and business entities, but he especially enjoyed serving as a mediator the last 20 years before retiring.

Larry was a faithful member of Waples Memorial United Methodist Church where he served as chairman of the Staff Parish committee, Board of Trustees, Finance committee, and was a member of the Back Sliders bible study. He served in the Denison community as President of the Chamber of Commerce, President of the Denison Industrial Foundation, and served on the board of the Denison Development Alliance. He worked extensively with Texoma Medical Center from 1990 forward, serving six years as Chairman of the board. He was co-chair of the first Reba Golf Tournament, which benefited the TMC foundation, and was active on this committee for 20 years. Larry served on the board of American Bank of Texas starting in 1989, and was also active with the American Cancer Society, Juvenile Alternatives and United Way.

Larry was an avid outdoorsman. He enjoyed duck hunting, deer hunting, and fishing, and he was an active member of Ducks Unlimited and the National Wild Turkey Federation. Larry also enjoyed playing golf and was a member of Denison Country Club for many years.

Larry is survived by his loving wife Donna Dossey Evans; son, Brett and wife Hillary Evans of Fort Worth; daughter, Meredith and husband Trey Doty of Denison; grandchildren, Lucy and Evan Doty both of Denison; and his sisters, Carol McFall of Mexia, and Barbara Carey of Nacogdoches.
