SHERMAN - Funeral services for Esther Lou Bandy Harrell will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday March 8 at Forest Park Lawndale Cemetery in Houston, followed by a reception at Forest Park Lawndale Funeral Home from 1:30-3:30 p.m. Mrs. Harrell, 99, passed away Tuesday March 4, 2014 at Texoma Healthcare.|
Lou was born on a farm in Johnson County Texas on November 19, 1914 to the late George and Edith (Love) Bandy. She attended school in the area and participated in the family farm until the entire family moved to Canyon, Texas so all the children could attend college at West Texas State Teachers College. She met and married the love of her life, James Alton Harrell while in college and was married in Canyon on June 4, 1936. She and Alton moved to Houston after that year and remained there throughout their 60 year marriage that ended with his death in 1996. Together they owned and operated the East End Venetian Blind Company of Houston and managed rental property. She was the public face of those operations while her husband was occupied as a career City of Houston Firefighter.
Education had always been important in her family and she was a major encourager in seeing that her two sons finished The University of Texas at Austin as undergraduates and then completed UT Medical School, residency, and training. She lived in Houston most of her adult life and moved to Sherman in 2006 as her health declined.
Lou will be remembered as a loving mother, wife, friend, and business woman who never said an ill thing of anyone and loved everyone. She was truly the glue that held her family together and to the highest standards. She loved to participate in the lives of her two sons and their extended families.
Mrs. Harrell was preceded in death by her parents, four of her five siblings, her husband Alton Harrell, and her daughter-in-law, Ginny Harrell.
She is survived by her two sons, Dr. Jimmy Harrell of Sherman and Dr. Barry Harrell and wife Nancy of Hunt, Texas; six grandchildren, Dr. David Harrell, Richard Harrell, Kirk Harrell, Beth Harrell Beaird, Jennifer Harrell Wichtler, and Dr. John Kelley and their families; sixteen great grandchildren; and one sister, Mary Nell Blanks of Bridgeport, Texas.
The family would like to recognize the special care she received from the Preston House employees, Home Hospice of Grayson County, and her special attendants, Karen Haulbrook, Venus Daniels, and Barbara Ford.
Memorials can be made to Home Hospice of Grayson County at 505 W. Center Sherman, TX 75090, First Baptist Church of Sherman at 400 S. Travis Sherman, TX 75090, or The Amazing Place of Houston at 3735 Drexel Houston, TX 77027.
