SHERMAN - A Life Celebration for Mr. Horace Lyons Jr., 88, of Sherman, Texas, will be held at 1 p.m. on Saturday, June 22, 2013 at Center Union Baptist Church, located at 102 N. Eagle Circle in Colbert, Okla. C.E. Shaw, Minister of Grand Avenue Church of Christ, Sherman, will officiate along with Pastor Brent Butler as the eulogist. Interment will follow at Eastside Cemetery in Colbert. Public viewing will be on Friday, June 21, 2013 from 10 a.m. until 8 p.m. at the Cravens Funeral Home, located at 225 W. Brockett St. in Sherman.

Mr. Horace Lyons Jr. was born on Aug. 3, 1924 in Colbert to the parentage of Roscoe and Ardelia James Lyons. He attended public school in Colbert and helped raise his younger siblings. He was united in marriage to the love of his life, Ms. Mable Irene Copelyn on Aug. 6, 1952 in Sherman. To this union, eight children were born. Horace's family truly meant the world to him.
Mr. Lyons helped to build the Denison Dam and Shoemake School in Colbert. He also worked for the Sherman Independent School District from 1957 until he retired in 1990. In Horace's past time, he raised hogs, cattle, and was known to have a "green thumb" as he loved to garden.
On June 16, 2013, surrounded by his loving family, Horace transitioned from a life of labor to an eternal life of reward. He was preceded in death by his parents, brothers: Jesse Craig Lyons, Rueben James Lyons, Walter Lyons, and Linus Lyons; sisters: Mae Jewel Lyons, Laura Givens, and Donna Pogue.
Those left with precious memories include his wife of 60 years Mable Irene Lyons, sons: Frank Lyons (Katherine) of Colbert, Kenneth Lyons, Stephen Lyons, and Phillip Lyons, all of Sherman; daughters: Elizabeth Polk (Billy Joe), Shirley Spratt, Janet Myles (Darrell), Joyce Lyons-Manning (James) all of Sherman; brothers: Carl Lyons (Elsie) of Ardmore, Okla. and Donald Ray Lyons of Colbert; sister Anita Meadows of Colbert; 12 grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren, four great-great-grandchildren and a multitude of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
The Lyons family is receiving personal care from the Cravens Funeral Home.
