CARTWRIGHT, Okla - Johnny Thomas "J.T." Powell, 89, retired to his final duty station on Friday, May 23, 2014. J.T. was born May 4, 1925 in Fort Worth, Texas to Joel Preston Sr. and Almeda Hodges Powell. He enlisted in the Navy during World War II and served at Port Hueneme, Calif., Pearl Harbor, Hawaii, and Marshall Islands. His enlistment ended in 1947 until he was recalled in 1948 for the Korean War. It was during this time he met and married JoAnn Moore with whom he began a family to include four children. In 1952, he enlisted in the U.S. Air Force and proudly served for 23 years at bases in Ft. Worth, England, Yuma, Ariz. France and Germany before retiring in 1967 at Perrin AFB in Sherman, Texas.

J.T. worked for the city of Sherman, appointed as Grayson County Auditor and was Comptroller at Dallas Intertribal Council before retiring civilian life. He was proud of his heritage as a member of the Chickasaw Nation, his military service and most of all, his family. He will be remembered most for his work ethic and his resilience. He resided in Cartwright, Okla. and was happiest working on his property and during family gatherings for holidays and special times. Mr. Powell was preceded in his final journey by his parents, five sisters and his beloved son Clifford Alan Powell.

He is survived by brothers, J.P. Powell, Jr. and Cecil Powell, many nephews and nieces. He is dearly loved and will be greatly missed by son Robert "Bob" Powell and wife Linda, and daughters Patricia Guier and husband David, and Teresa Shackleton and husand Philip. Also, grandsons John, Chris, Troy, Dax, Jeff, Matt, Josh, granddaughters Adrienne, Laura and Rebecca, nine great grandsons and two great granddaughters will miss "Grandpa Johnny" forever.

Honors and services are scheduled for Monday at 2:15 p.m. at Dallas Fort Worth National Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to Home Hospice of Grayson County and A.F.A.F. (Air Force Assistance Fund at
