SHERMAN - JD was born Tuesday, August 4, 1925 in Calera, Okla. to Eugene and Martha (Hodge) Pickens and passed from this life on Friday, February 21, 2014 at his home in Sherman, Texas at the age of 88.|
JD was raised and attended schools in Calera with his four siblings. After high school, he served in the U.S. Army for two years from 1950 to 1952. He then returned to Bryan county where he was employed with the Durant Police Department for one year. He then moved to Sherman and worked in law enforcement for thirty five years.
He began his employment in July 1953, and in November 1957 he made detective. He advanced through the ranks and through his hard work was appointed Chief of Police in November 1981.
Mr. Pickens enjoyed fishing, woodworking, gardening and flowers. His passion was being with his family, especially the grandchildren. He was a member of the Fairview Baptist Church.
Mr. Pickens was preceded in death by his son David Pickens, parents, 2 brothers and 2 sisters.
He is survived by his daughters and husband, Cathy Black (Rick Dean) of Denison, and Denise Cole (Jason) of Sherman, grandchildren Kurtis Klug (Whitney) of Anna, Ashley Cain (Blake) of Plano, Mallary Pickens of Sherman, Jayden Cole of Sherman, daughter-in-law Rhonda Pickens of Dallas, great granddaughter Brynlee Klug of Anna, and numerous nieces and nephews.
Services to celebrate JD's life will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday, Feb. 25, at Fairview Baptist Church with Pastor James Moore officiating. Interment will follow at Hagerman Cemetery with Rick Dean, Kurtis Klug, Jason Cole, Jayden Cole, Blake Cain and James Pickens serving as casketbearers.
The family will receive friends from 6 - 8 p.m. on Monday, Feb. 24, at Waldo Funeral Home.
