George Phillip Hagan Obituary
SHERMAN - George Phillip Hagan of Sherman, 87-year-old beloved husband, father, grandfather and great grandfather, passed away Tuesday, May 20, 2014 at Texoma Medical Center in Denison.

Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday at Forest Avenue Baptist Church in Sherman with Rev. Danny Wood and Rev. Brian Taylor officiating. Burial will follow at Cedarlawn Memorial Park Cemetery in Sherman.

George was born on June 11, 1926 in Sherman, son of Benjamin and Nannie Mae Daughety Hagan. He married Shirley Rae Smith on April 16, 1954 at North Park Baptist Church in Sherman.

He was a 1946 graduate of Sherman High School and attended Decatur Baptist College and North Texas Business School. He was in the U.S. Army Engineer Corps and served in France for 15 months.

George was saved at age 10 at North Park Baptist and began leading music at age 15. He served as Minister of Music at First Baptist, Gordonville for 13 1/2 years, from 1978-1991. He was also music director at Immanuel Baptist, Dallas and East Side Baptist, Denison, interim music director at North Park, Sherman and Music and Youth Director of First Baptist, Gunter.

In 1980, he was licensed as a minister of the Gospel. (Information excerpted from Official Register of Outstanding Americans, Special Edition of Southern Baptist Leaders, 1986) George was ordained as a deacon at Forest Ave. Baptist in 1972 and was Director of the Bus Ministry there for six years. George retired from Grumman-Olson after 26 years of service.

After 15 years of retirement, he went to work at Kroger's and worked there until his death. George loved being around people.

He is survived by his wife, Shirley; sons, Philip Ray Hagan and wife, Cheryl and Stephen Russell Hagan; six grandchildren and 11 great grandchildren.

Memorials may be made to the Forest Avenue Baptist Church Building Fund, 106 W. Forest Ave., Sherman, Texas 75090.

Visitation will be held at the funeral home from 6-8 p.m. Friday.
