SHERMAN - Jackie Eugene Nix was born in Bainbridge, Georgia on September 16, 1943 to Lurenzel Nix and Nell Barber and passed away on August 8, 2014 of natural causes at the age of 70.|
Jackie was a star football player in high school and college. He served as a Lieutenant in the Coast Guard, serving for six years including a tour of duty in Vietnam. Jackie married Harriett Cornelison on July 28, 1979 and they just celebrated their 35th wedding anniversary.
After his military service, Jackie gave his life to the Lord. He was an atheist who became a Christian at the age of 28 and answered the call to serve as a pastor. Jackie graduated with a Bachelor of Business degree from Presbyterian College and a Masters of Divinity from Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary. He served the Lord as a Baptist pastor for twenty-six years in Florida and South Carolina. He enjoyed football, sports, photography, fishing, and spending time with his family.
Jackie was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Lurenzel Nix Jr.; and his niece, LaNell Green.
He is survived by his wife, Harriett Nix of Sherman, Texas; his daughter, Elisha Bird and her husband, Scott of Brownwood, Texas; his granddaughter, Emmalee Bird of Brownwood, Texas; his sister, Angela Green and husband, Richard of Bainbridge, Georgia; his sisters-in-laws, Pat Troutz and Joy Cole, both of Sherman, Texas; his brother-in-law, Jay Cornelison; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held at the chapel of the First Baptist Church of Sherman at 10 a.m. on Wednesday with Pastor Dr. Mike Lawson and Pastor Steve Rice officiating. Interment will follow at West Hill Cemetery with Steve Pedigo, David Pedigo, Larry Brown, Fred Freeman, Jim Peterson and Barry Bell serving as pallbearers.
