DENISON - Calvin Holder, age 91, entered into eternal life Tuesday, Jan. 4, 2011 at his home. |
Calvin D. Holder was born and raised north of Denison, attending the Riverside School. He married the love of his life, Quanah Marie Maxwell Feb. 14, 1939 and by Dec. 1941, they had two children. Calvin was working at the Kraft Foods Plant in May of 1944 when he was drafted into the U.S. Army and reported to Fort Bliss in El Paso for basic training.
After advanced training, he was assigned to 597th Battery, Field Artillery, anti-Aircraft (known as triple AAA). By Dec. 1944 via New York City and the Queen Mary, he spent Christmas in England. Across the channel to France, assigned to Bradley's First Army then to Patton's Third Army, he joined "The Battle of the Bulge" and spent the next five months in combat. While dug-in on the banks of the Rhine River, came his first sight of a jet, as an American pilot flew the captured German plane over his position on the way back to England. His unit had received orders not to shoot at it. With the end of the war, he traveled south to Berteschgarten "Hitler's Mountain Retreat" and spent the summer on the French and German borders.
From the southern French port of La Harve Ra., he sailed for home aboard a Liberty Ship landing in New Jersey at Camp Kiler to Camp Fannin in Tyler, where he was mustered out of the Army in January 1946.
After the war, Mr. Holder worked for Safeway-Brookside Company from 1950 to 1985. During this time, he also became a Master Plumber and owned and operated his own plumbing company. Calvin and Quanah were married for 69 years and raised four children here in Denison. Calvin was a ninety-one year old, fifth generation Grayson County resident, and until a few years ago, the oldest active Licensed Master Plumber in the State of Texas.
