Melvin Newman Neeley, 89, of Roxton passed away at home Wednesday, June 8, 2011.
Funeral services were held at Cooper-Sorrells Funeral Home Chapel in Honey Grove, Texas at 2 p.m. Saturday, June 11, 2011 with Reverend Jerry Smith Rev. Mona Millard officiating. Pallbearers were Craig Bryant, Scottie Bryant, Brad Burnsed, Terry Neeley, Ross Neeley, Butch Huffer, Ronnie Hall and Robert West. Posthumously named Honorary Pallbearers were nephews Carl Neeley, George Neeley, Jimmy Neeley and Jerry Huffer.
Burial followed at Roxton Restland Cemetery with military honors rendered by the U.S. Army Honor Guard at graveside. Family visitation was held at 1 p.m. prior to the service.
Mr. Neeley was born Feb. 17, 1922 in Honey Grove to Miles Newton and Mattie Moore Neeley. He attended schools in Honey Grove, and then Paris Junior College. He was employed by Texas and Pacific Railroad and volunteered for the U.S. Army Air Corps in 1943. He married Vivian (Perry) Neeley of Roxton, on Nov. 7, 1944 in Bonham.
After returning from the service he was employed by Missouri Pacific Railroad for 44 years, retiring in Sherman as the depot agent. After his retirement he and his wife Vivian moved to Roxton, to make their home.
He was preceded in death by his parents; two sisters, Ethylene Richardson and Lola Huffer; two brothers, Manuel Neeley and John Ray Neeley; niece Brenda Hagan and four nephews, Carl Neeley, George Neeley, Jimmy Neeley and Jerry Huffer.
Mr. Neeley is survived by his wife Vivian of the home, one sister, Sara Hall of Arlington.
He is also survived by niece Anita Everhart and husband John of Dallas, Texas; nephew Ronnie Hall and wife Pam of Arlington; niece Mary Vineyard and husband Bob of Arlington; niece Sandra Hormillosa and husband Tony of Springtown; niece Elizabeth Ann West and husband Robert Ed of Garland; nephew Butch Huffer and wife Peggy of Powderly; and special nieces and nephew Charlotte Shannon and husband J.W., Martha Burnsed and husband Billy, and Charles Neeley and wife Dolly, all of Honey Grove.
