Charles Jones Obituary
Charles was born June 1, 1934 in Thurman, Ohio to B. Lewis and Agnes (McBride) Jones and entered into eternal life with the Lord on December 9, 2016 in Sherman, Texas at the age of 82.
Charles was a 1952 graduate and valedictorian of Rio Grande High School in Rio Grande, Ohio. He then attended Ohio University in Athens, Ohio where he was on the Dean's List and a member of the ROTC program. In 1953, Charles received acceptance into the United States Naval Academy in Annapolis, Maryland where he received a Bachelor's of Science Degree in Engineering in 1957.
Charles joined the United States Air Force where he served his country as a pilot for 23 years. He completed the USAF advanced training course for Strategic Air Command Combat crews and served in Vietnam and received the Airman Medal. After retiring as a Major in 1980, he worked as a realtor in Marshall, Texas.
Charles married Penelope (Penny) Harris on May 28, 1960 in Marshall, Texas.
Charles was a high school honor student, member of 4-H Club, and athlete who excelled in football and basketball. He was an accomplished singer, competing in solo and group performances throughout school as well as church, musicals, and plays. Charles also had the wonderful opportunity to sing on the Ed Sullivan Show in 1956 with the U.S. Naval Academy Choir.
He enjoyed golf, watching football and other sports, and spending time with his grandchildren. Charles will be remembered as a true gentleman with such a compassionate, caring spirit.
He was preceded in death by his parents, sister, Sara Jane Warner and brother Ben Lewis Jones, II. He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Penny, of Marshall, Texas; daughter Kitty Richardson and her husband Chris of Sherman, Texas; daughter Deidra Gager of Victorville, California; daughter Pamela Jones of Marshall, Texas; and son James Harris Jones of Austin, Texas. Grandchildren include: Katy Gager Dickey, husband Tyler, and son Teddy of Dallas, Texas; Laura Gager of Houston, Texas; Elora Richardson Moore and husband Trent of Fort Worth, Texas; and Collin Richardson of Sherman, Texas; and brother-in-law Dave Warner of Jackson, Ohio.
A family memorial services was held on December 30 at Dallas-Fort Worth National Cemetery in Dallas, Texas.
