WINNSBORO — Jesse Carol Berthold, a long time resident of Winnsboro, passed away peacefully on April 25, 2014 at NHC Parklane in Columbia.
She was born on March 17, 1926 in Columbus, Ga. to Charles Henry Berthold, Jr. and Edna Anna Kruse Berthold, both of St. Louis, Mo. whose parents immigrated from Germany to the United States in the late 1800's. The family moved several times before Carol started school in Winston-Salem, N.C. In 1936, they moved to Winnsboro, where she would graduate from Mt. Zion Institute in 1942. She was a member of the Beta Club, chosen "Most Dependable" by the Senior Class, and was the salutatorian of her graduating class.
She attended Bawen Business College in Columbia. In April, 1943 she began working at US Rubber Company in the Industrial Relations/Human Resources Department. She retired as Human Resources Administrator after 46 years of service from what later became Uniroyal Goodrich Tire Company. She was a member of First Baptist Church, where she served as Church Clerk for 40 years. She was a member of the Sunshine Club, sang in the church choir for many years, and served on numerous church committees. She was also a member of the Fairfield Historical Society, Friends of the Winnsboro Library, and Riverbanks Society. In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by two brothers, Russell Charles Berthold and Harold Richard Berthold.
A memorial service will be conducted at the First Baptist Church in Winnsboro on Saturday, May 3, at 11 a.m.. Visitation will be held at the church on Friday, May 2 from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. Donations can be made to the First Baptist Church in her honor.
