Leo Michael Chandler
Born and educated in Spokane, Leo attended St. Francis of Assisi Grade School and Gonzaga Prep High School (Class of '52) where he lettered in football, and was involved in drama and debate. As a student at Eastern Washington College, Leo was Student Body President, Editor of the newspaper, and lettered in football and swimming. Following graduation in 1957, he coordinated the ASB Presidents national convention at the University of Michigan. As alum, Leo served as a director of the EWU Alumni Association and remained a dedicated supporter of EWU.
It was at EWU that Leo met Patricia; they married in 1957 and began rising their five children while living in Spokane. Leo was president of the Spokane Club Managers Association and as a member of the Chamber of Commerce Tourism and Convention Bureau avidly promoted the 1962 Seattle World's Fair. Chandler was an eight-year veteran of the U.S.N.R. receiving an honorable discharge in 1961.
The family moved to Seattle, WA in 1965 and bought a home in St. Pius X Parish in 1975. For over 30 years, Leo designed retail stores. In 1995 two stores for which he supplied store fixtures were selected as retail stores of the year. An avid sports fan, Leo refereed football and basketball for 25 years in Spokane, Whitman and King counties. He was a founding member of the Mountlake Terrace Rotary and a 37-year member of St. Pius X Catholic Church where he captained the Lector Team for over 10 years. In his retirement, Leo was able to use his degree in English to tutor student athletes at the University of Washington.
Leo suffered declining health over the past few years and had been undergoing chemotherapy for Lymphoma since September. Hospitalized with Congestive Heart Failure at Providence in Everett, WA, God mercifully took Leo home in his sleep the morning of November 29, 2012. Special thanks go to the doctors, nurses and staff at Group Health for caring for Leo over the years; to the nurses and doctors at Providence for their care; and to the hundreds of family and friends who have provided the prayer support which sustained Leo and his immediate family during the past three months.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his sisters, Catherine Chandler and Betty MacPherson; brother, Thomas; and daughter, Kelly Marie.
Leo is survived by his wife of 55 years, Dr. Pat Chandler; and children, Shannon Roeder (Norm Hawker), Bridgett, Michael (Ling) and Kevin (Susan) Chandler. Leo also has two grandchildren, Marcus Roeder and Anna Chandler. His large extended family and close friends include loved ones in the Spokane area, Eastern and Central Washington, Greater Puget Sound, and out-of-state.
